It’s Official: Big East Lacrosse

As we mentioned last week, the Big East is launching lacrosse as a sponsored sport. All 7 schools that participate in the sport will be part of the league. You can also read their official release for the 2010 launch of the sport.

With the NEC expecting to sponsor the sport in the next 3-4 years, there will be some serious movement.

The CAA will lose Villanova to the Big East and Robert Morris and Sacred Heart to the NEC. That leaves only 4 schools. UMass and Penn St. are expected to fill that void.

The ECAC would then absorb the GWLL.

Nothing has been made official in the ECAC/CAA department regarding expansion. But I’m sure UMass and Penn St. will move to the CAA rather than remain in the ECAC that would feature only Loyola, Hobart and Fairfield as eastern members.

The only real wild card would be the MAAC. They will continue to sponsor the sport. If they wanted to, they could ask Loyola and Fairfield to join since they are already all-sports members, which would give the MAAC (6) all-sports members (Canisius, Manhattan, Siena, Marist, Fairfield and Loyola) with St. Joseph’s and VMI as associate members. With the CAA at only 6 members, it wouldn’t be a shock to see the CAA also looking for a 7th member to protect their automatic bid should one of the remaining 6 schools leave (assuming UMass ans Penn St. join).

Stay tuned for official conference moves and announcements.
