”Hofstra’s basketball problem can be traced back to the administration’s ill-conceived notion that its football program would make gains as a conference member in the then-Atlantic 10. It dragged the rest of Hofstra’s athletic teams into the CAA, which was teetering on extinction, and basketball has suffered the most.
Even without a strong frontcourt, the Pride likely would have earned two or three NCAA bids, thanks to Pecora’s acumen in recruiting outstanding guards, had Hofstra stayed in the America East. Under the current conference arrangement, America East member Stony Brook, once light years behind Hofstra, probably will be the next Division I team from Long Island to make the NCAA Tournament.”
