Western Athletic Conference athletic directors showed little interest in adding a basketball-only member to give it an even 10-team circuit, declining to take up even the possibility of expansion at their annual spring meetings.
The sessions in Phoenix closed yesterday.
Commissioner Karl Benson said there was interest shown by a potential member but no formal presentation or request made. He said no vote was taken by the WAC Council (athletic directors, senior women’s administrators and faculty representatives).
The school is believed to be Seattle University.
“There are always schools trying to gauge the interest (in them) by the WAC,” Benson said.
In the past Denver and Utah Valley State have been mentioned as basketball-only possibilities. The WAC has had sports-specific “associate” members in various sports such as Sacramento State in baseball.
The nine-member WAC has long tossed around the possibility of adding a 10th member to make for easier parings and travel partners in men’s and women’s basketball, where schools play home-and-home series.
