My thoughts:

Sure, Hofstra would rather be in the A10. Most schools would. But at 14 teams, there is little reason to expand. And if they were, they would likely seek better preforming programs or new markets. Butler for example would give another midwest school to the group.

Hofstra only makes sense if:

1) The Big East splits and the non-football schools form their own conference and invite existing A10 members (Xavier tops that list).
The A10 expanding to 14 protected themselves against this future raid, knowing that even if 4 of their schools left, they'd still be safe.

2) Fordham (or someone else) leaves the A10:
There has been talk of the problems they've had since joining the A10. And they've tried a power play with the Patriot League for football over the lack of scholarships. I've said before, that if I'm the Patriot and I'm considering expansion, I'd look to Fordham. Meet them in the middle and say you'll allow partial scholarships for football, but you have to bring all your sports back to the Patriot.

Hofstra only makes sense if:

1) The Big East splits and the non-football schools form their own conference and invite existing A10 members (Xavier tops that list).
The A10 expanding to 14 protected themselves against this future raid, knowing that even if 4 of their schools left, they’d still be safe.

2) Fordham (or someone else) leaves the A10:
There has been talk of the problems they’ve had since joining the A10. And they’ve tried a power play with the Patriot League for football over the lack of scholarships. I’ve said before, that if I’m the Patriot and I’m considering expansion, I’d look to Fordham.
