New Orleans Considers D3 Downgrade

The University of New Orleans announced it is exploring reclassification from Division I to Division III, effective with the 2010-11 academic year. The school cited budgetary concerns as its primary reason for considering the switch and committed to a decision by May 15, 2010.

“We had to reduce funding for athletics in the previous round of budget cuts, and since then the financial picture of the university and the athletics program has not improved,” said Chancellor Tim Ryan.

    They need to do it and get it over with. They've been at this point before, and if they don't make the decision this time, they'll be back in this spot again two years asking the same questions.

    While applaud UNO's administration for its leadership, which is sorely missing at places like Houston Baptist and NJ Tech, this move represents everything wrong with Division III. The majority of schools participate in Division III because of a cost motivation move rather than a philosophical motivation.

    The NCAA needs a division for schools that want an athletics program that mirrors Division I and II in philosophical motivation but is done on the cheap.

    No where, though, has there been explanation of why UNO does not consider a move to Division II. The only reason I can think of is because Division III has a much lower cost compared to Division II.
