majerus2 Majerus, St. Louis Not Happy in A10

My take is simple: if you have problems with your administration, don’t use the media…keep it behind the scenes.

You can bet that Majerus would not be complaining about “east coast airports” if St. Louis were in the Big East instead of Marquette. The Billikens would still have to fly to 12 east coast cities and to Tampa, FL, with only 2 other mid-west schools with DePaul and Notre Dame.

Even worse is that St. Louis COULD have been in the Missouri Valley. But they opted for the Atlantic 10 instead. Fast forward to 2010 and you have 5 A10 schools poised to potentially get NCAA bids while the MVC might get 2.

There has been plenty of chatter about these quotes from Majerus on various forums.

    what’s next in realignment

They didnt get out bc Conference USA wouldnt allow full time members without football programs. I went to SLU when they were in Conference USA and for their first season in the A-10. Conference USA was not financially stable enough to support the bigger programs. The league was about to absolve which is why 9 out of the 12 teams left the conference in 2005. Only Memphis, UAB, and Southern Miss remained so to keep the conference alive they scrambled for lousy southern teams. Conference USA used to be something, I mean, Charlotte, Louisville, Memphis, TCU, Marquette, Cincinnati. Now it is nothing. Slu went to the A-10 because it could not get into the Big East. Also, at the time the A-10 provided better competition for Slu's main sports, soccer and basketball. The MVC is nothing special, maybe Slu would get into the tournament more often in that conference but I would rather have my alma mater play against stronger opponents than play teams like Bradley, Evansville, Wichita State,Northern Iowa and Illinois State.

More conferences should think about making that a rule.

They got out of Conference USA BECAUSE the conference will no longer allow full time members without football progams.

I live in the St. Louis area, and this has been discussed on talk radio shows and in the local media off and on for about three years.

The reason this is coming to the surface is that a lot of administrators at St. Louis University is closing their ears to any other option. Many of the alum have been ignored, but now they can't ignore the head coach coming out with this public.

Hopefully, (I said hopefully, not probably) the St. Louis University officials will re-evaluate the A-10 and take a second look at the Missouri Valley.

If, (a big if) St. Louis University was to head to the Missouri Valley, the Missouri Valley would go shopping for one more program to make it a 12 school conference.

Butler would not turn down the chance to move out of the Horizon. Thus giving the Missouri Valley a pretty good Conference.

    East West
    Butler St. Louis
    Indiana St. Missouri St.
    Evansville Wichita St.
    Southern Illinois Creighton
    Illinois St. Drake
    Bradley Northern Iowa

Schools really need to get past academics if they really want to be good at any sport. It is a 19th Century philosophy that does not work in the 21st Century.

I had a friend who worked in the SLU athletics office when SLU moved to the A-10. MVC wanted them but SLU saw itself as bigger academically than Bradley, Drake, Creighton, and Evansville.

SLU is a research university. Those private schools in the MVC are not.

Besides a lack of an interest from administrators, my friend said SLU was waiting for a Catholic midwest athletics league to form if/when the Big East breaks up.

This is tough for Saint Louis. They got out of Conference USA probably because they could not handle the travel there. Unfortunately, they did not choose the correct conference. They Missouri Valley would have been a much better choice because the competition is not as tough in the Valley and the travel would not be nearly as harsh. I am not sure if the Valley would want them, but I am sure that Saint Louis would gladly go there if given the chance. It would make so much more sense on so many levels for them to be in the Valley. The closest team to them in the A-10 is probably Dayton. The farthest that any team in the Valley would be perhaps Creighton, which is in Omaha. Rick is going to lobby all the way for this one!!
