It’s been a busy week for the Big 12 administrators. There is talk out of Omaha from some reliable sources, that Nebraska is set to leave the Big 12 for the Big Ten, and has reportedly received an invitation from the Big Ten.
Even more interesting are rumors that because of the alleged planned Nebraska departure, that the Big 12 is on the cusp of falling apart. According to sources, including Chip Brown of OrangeBloods.com who appeared on ESPN, Texas, Texas A&M;, Texas Tech, Colorado, Oklahoma and Oklahoma are poised to join the Pac-10 as early as 2012.
Such a move would leave a number of questions for the remaining 5 Big 12 schools. Missouri seemed poised for a Big Ten invite themselves, but would really need the Big Ten to extend an invitation for a 13th school ahead of their observed plans.
Meanwhile, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas St. and Iowa St. would be left out. The NY Times is reporting that the Big East would have interest in these 4 schools. It is unknown if it would be in a 20 team conference or if it were a football split that would combine the 4-5 remaining Big 12 schools with Uconn, Syracuse, Rutgers, Pitt, WVU, Cincinnati, Louisville and USF.
The Mountain West is another option that any “left over” Big 12 schools might consider. The 9 member Mountain West could target the likes of Kansas, Kansas St. and Baylor to expand to 12. Such a move would likely give the conference a BCS autobid, something they’ve been seeking.
More news will be coming this week if indeed these developments unfold.
Lots of updates will be needed for the Grid of Conference Realignment Possibilities
