Multiple sources are claiming that Colorado will formally accept an invitation Thursday to join the Pac-10, making them the 11th member. Five other Big 12 schools (Texas, Texas A&M;, Texas tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St) are expected to receive invitations as well in the near future, and expected to to accept.

In the event that those 5 schools remain, the Pac-10 is expected to invite Utah to form a Pac-12.

Was just a rumor. I debunked it at http://twitter.com/ncaasports. Had a dialog with the station that was rumored to have "reported" it. It wasn't the case, as they let me know. Even were kind enough to send the link to the MP3 of the show. True professionals.

What happened to Maryland going to the big ten?
That makes more sense then Missouri

I put USF pretty far down the list of appealing schools to conferences like the ACC and SEC.

For the SEC, the you'd find all the ACC schools as higher candidates. You'd also find others like WVU and Louisville higher up. Not to mention any remaining B12 schools.

For the ACC, they might chose to expand to 14 if the Big East lost Syracuse and Rutgers to the B10 and split…figure in order of priority the ACC might target (Syracuse, Rutgers) Uconn, Pitt, WVU, Louisville.

So if the ACC even needed 4 members, i think you'd see Uconn, Pitt, WVU and Louisville join before USF.

    Michael,

If in fact that Big 12 chose to remain a conference (no Pac-16) then there are options.

    1) Remain at 10 members
Losing Nebraska's revenue hurts, but at 10 teams, it's 2 less mouths to feed. There's a chance that the numbers add up and the schools make the same if not more money.

    2) Expand with 2:
BYU makes the most sense. Louisville is another school that could gain attention, especially if Utah is in the Pac-10. Louisville extends the footprint east, adds a quality program. Also would be a huge addition for basketball: Kansas, Louisville and Texas together? Would be nice.

    3) Big 12 folds:
Pac-16 scenario would leave 5 B12 schools looking for home. Too many scenarios to list here (MWC, CUSA, Big east, new conference)

South Florida will probably go to the ACC first, because the SEC and Big XII are probably not ready to invite them. The SEC will go after Florida State, Miami, Georgia Tech, and Clemson. The ACC will then perhaps get what is left of the Big East and perhaps some Conference USA schools to get to 16. The Big East looks to be the real conference in danger if all this is headed the way that it appears to be.

So we know for sure that Colorado and Nebraska are gone, and that Texas & its posse wants to somehow keep the Big 12 together. Its only chance for that is BYU, which (1) brings the Salt Lake City market to help salvage the loss of the Denver market, (2) offers a solid football program that sells out a 60,000+ seat stadium, (3) brings great TV ratings each time it actually gets on ESPN, and (4) has a solid fan base with a large presence in multiple western states, including California.

To get back to 12, much to TCU's dismay, the Big 12 needs to go for a school that would offer (1) a brand new, large market and (2) access to great, new recruting grounds. USF is the way to go.

And for anyone who thinks that's too spread out geographically, it's not much worse for USF than they already have, and it's still much, much more geographically sensible than a Pac-16.
