It’s been an interesting story so far and it’s gotten some legs.

Looks like BYU could move to the WAC for all sports except football. BYU football would participate as an independent, ala Notre Dame, Army and Navy.

The loss of BYU would be a serious blow to the Mountain West Conference. ESPN is reporting that the conference is doing everything it can to retain BYU, including sweetening the TV revenue in their favor.

The Mountain West would be in a tough spot for membership as well as the loss of a powerful program like BYU. The conference would have lost Utah and BYU, two of the top programs in the conference. They did bring in Boise St., but they would hardly make up for the loss of both Utah schools. Some rumors have already started popping up about schools like Boise St. and San Diego St. returning to the WAC. One should not rule out the Mountain West exploring a replacement for BYU such as Nevada, Fresno St., or even another Texas school such as Houston to aid TCU.

I think BYU and Denver join the WCC.

BYU previously destroyed the WAC and, now, it is trying to burn either the Mountain West, the WAC, or both.

The notion that the Y can be the Notre Dame of the West is simply laughable.

While still a long shot this may be a renaissance for independent football programs. BYU can command a better TV contract for themselves than their current conference. Texas I think could like wise although the Big XII concessions to them might be enough to make it difficult. If Miami's recent resurgence as a good football program continues they could also possibly get a better TV deal by themselves than they do with the ACC. Both of those senarios assume that conferences would allow all other sports to be in their conference (WAC and Big East are willing to do it but would a more profitable conference like the Big XII or ACC be willing to?) The BCS rules would have to change (possibly all having the Notre Dame deal but only the highest ranked is guaranteed a spot.)

This is interesting. BYU can do this more easily because of their affliation with the Mormons. It will probably not affect recruiting very much, if at all. They have their own TV network, but if ESPN came calling I am sure that they would take that deal. I am sure that this is partly due to the fact that the Mountain West does not have a deal with ESPN/ABC and is stuck on Versus and CBS College Sports, which do not reach as many people. The WAC has a deal with ESPN but is not on as much as the BCS conferences, although the new deal increases the appearances. Everyone can figure out all the permutations that could happen because of this. They are probably too many to mention. I am sure that this is not the end of this.
