Add two more schools to the Big Sky stable. A source has told me that the Big Sky press conference and the Cal Poly press conference will reveal that both Cal Poly and UC Davis will be brought in a football only members in the Big Sky, bringing it’s membership for that sport to 11. But as there is no conference championship games at the FCS level, there is less of a need to expand to 12. But for scheduling purposes, that might change. Southern Utah and North Dakota are the top candidates to be included as the 12th school.

All that will remain would be North Dakota, South Dakota and Southern Utah. There had been earlier talk about the potential for Summit League football, that at 6 members could get an automatic playoff bid. That would require convincing MVFC schools like NDSU, SDSU and WIU to join.

The Great West is really nothing more than a scheduling agreement. It does not have an automatic invite to the AFKA 1-AA playoffs or the NCAA Tournament. It is really just a stepping stone for schools that are just starting out in Division I. I would think that the Summmit will start a football league as early as next season. The Missouri Valley would still have six members in its football conference, so they would be fine. The Great West will not have an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament until 2020 at the earliest, so I would not be surprised to see it fold very soon.
