1K7Dg Hawaii Saying Aloha to the WAC

They might be thousands of miles off the mainland, but Hawaii is about to shake things up in the conference landscape.

Hawaii apparently has a handshake deal with the Mountain West to join for football only. Their other sports would likely be moved to the Big West.
While all eyes focused on the football moves the WAC has made of late to protect that sport, it’s basketball that is the bigger problem right now. If Hawaii departs, the WAC could be at risk of losing their automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament.

If Hawaii departs, the WAC will have to sort things out. There are few football options to join. Seattle will likely make the move to the WAC now, but the loss of Hawaii would be a big blow.

As for the Mountain West, a potential Hawaii football inclusion could tie in with the potential departure of TCU to the Big East. If TCU leaves, the Mountain West would likely remain at 10 football members with Hawaii. If TCU remains, the MWC might reach out to Utah St. to replace the departing Utah and BYU in the Utah market. Such a move would give the MWC 12 football schools and the opportunity to have a conference championship game.

Could happen. In fact, the Sunbelt could go bold with LA Tech and NMSU, which would leave only Idaho and SJSU…both without a conference.

Even more trickle down…SJSU could go to the Big West for non-football sports which might bump CSUB from any Big West future. And poor Idaho would be out of luck. Both Denver and Idaho would be packing their bags for the Summit unless the Big Sky invites Idaho for non-football sports.

The future of the WAC as a football conference, and maybe as a conference overall, might depend on what Hawaii does. If Hawaii leaves and TCU stays, which I think is what will happen, then Utah State would probably also leave the WAC to get the Mountain West to 12 teams. This could lead to Louisiana Tech leaving town ahead of the posse and going to the Sun Belt. That would leave the WAC with San Jose State, Idaho, and New Mexico State as full members. What they would do I don't know. It might lead to the Mountain West basically becoming what the WAC was for three years, a sixteen team football conference. Eight of those schools in that sixteen team football conference knew better and formed the Mountain West. What saved the WAC was the disbanding of the Big West as a football conference, which allowed them to get schools like Boise State and Nevada. Whether the WAC will live to see the day when Texas-San Antonio and Texas State become members is anyone's guess. However, one thing is becoming very clear. The Mountain West has won.
