Ohio Valley Conference Considering North Alabama

Category: NCAA Conference Expansion & Realignment, Ohio Valley Conference Expansion

It’s certainly been no secret that the OVC has given some thought to adding UNA as a member. But the behind the scenes discussions have finally seemed to come out into the light.

The OVC has officially requested information from North Alabama in regards to UNA upgrading from Division II and joining the Division I FCS Ohio Valley Conference.

The request is in no way a formal application to join, simply the routine exploratory steps taken by conferences considering expansion candidates.

Should UNA be invited an accept a future OVC invitation, they would become the 12th member of the OVC.

  • That would be good news, but I do not think this would be the end of D2 schools to move up to D1 to fill in spots that are vacated, and that more 1AA schools move to the FBS conference.

  • If I understand it correctly, the Ohio Valley would have to invite North Alabama for them to move to Division I under the new rules.

  • This would be a good move for the Ohio Valley to protect itself from potentially losing other members. It will really be nothing more than a stepping stone conference.
