southland expansion1 Southland to Add UNO along with UIW and ACU

As has been expected over the past few weeks, the Southland Conference is set to expand by adding University of the Incarnate Word, Abilene Christian University and University of New Orleans. UIW and ACU will join for FCS football as well, upgrading from Division 2, with UNO set to join for non-football sports on Thursday. The addition of the 3 schools follows the additions of Oral Roberts and Houston Baptist, bringing a total of 5 new schools to the conference. The Southland recently lost Texas St., UTSA and Texas-Arlington to the WAC, although those 3 schools will all be leaving the WAC next season.

Well, they could announce in a few weeks that Lamar, Sam Houston State and Central Arkansas join the WAC and North Dakota State for the 2014 season. Then for 2015 SFA, McNeese State and Nicholls State can join. Then years down the road, the others can join. Then you have none football schools for the WAC with Utah valley, Grand Canyon U., Bakersfield State, texas-Pan America, Western Washington and San Bernardino State.

I like the idea, but it would necessitate all of the existing Southland football teams upgrading to FBS, increasing scholarships, expanding stadium capacity, etc. Some, like Lamar and Sam Houstin, could probably do it. Others, like Northwestern State, have neither the budget nor the personnel to go FBS.

Any chance that the Southland could join forces with the left over of the WAC to save WAC football by doing a football only merger? There is something Hurd said about an FCS conference in talks with the WAC to this idea. The only two conferences I think that are close to the WAC are Southland and MVFC. Unless CAA is involved as well which I doubt many of the CAA schools not FBS ready.
