University of Idaho Idaho to Big Sky for Non Football SportsA move that has been in the works for months is now official: Idaho will be joining the Big Sky for non-football sports in 2014. The WAC, which recently added Utah Valley and CSU-Bakersfield, will now be down to 5 members with New Mexico St., Seattle and Denver rounding out the membership. The WAC will likely have to look at adding other Great West members to boost their numbers, with UTPA the likely target for #6. Chicago St. and NJIT could be brought in as well to increase to 8.

For the Big Sky, the addition of Idaho gives them another school right in the middle of their footprint. For Idaho, the move will give them more stability than in the WAC while they wait to see what happens with the Mountain West. Idaho has long sought membership in the Mountain West while the conference has has little interest in adding them.

The WAC needs six active Division I members for 2013-2014 and 2014-2015. UC San Diego would not count as an active member because they would be making the transition. UTPA, Chicago State, and NJIT would count as active Division I members. Starting in 2015-2016, the WAC would need seven active Division I members. It will be very difficult for them to survive as a conference much longer. Even if they do, they will probably be in the high 20s for conference RPI at the very best.

yes, but they wouldn’t count as a division 1 member until at least the transition is over.

I’ve been hearing that UC San Diego has been looking to go D-I, they could be an option for the WAC.
