Georgia Southern University Appalachian State & Georgia Southern to Join Sun Belt; Idaho and New Mexico St. as Football Only MembersAppalachian St. and Georgia Southern will upgrade their football program from FCS to FBS and join the Sun Belt. Upon joining, the schools would be the 9th and 10th football members. Both schools are expected to join for the 2015 season.

In addition to the (2) all-sports members, the Sun Belt will also add Idaho and New Mexico St. as football-only members. The move will allow the Sun Belt to field a championship game. Schools like Jacksonville St., Lamar and Sam Houston St. were other potential members for spots 11-12 but will likely have to wait for current Sun Belt members to leave.

New mexico State and Idaho will not get invited. If they do? Watch several SBC schools knocking on C-USA’s doors to let them in. They are outside of the footprint. I do see Tennessee-Chattanooga and Lamar get invites way before those two. Tenn.-Chattanooga have been mentioned recently as a replacement for Middle Tennessee State. Lamar and Sam Houston State been brought up as a way to keep Texas State from bolting to MWC. Jacksonville State, North Alabama and Alabama State wants in. One of them could get in if South Alabama moves to another conference. liberty, Delaware and James Madison were brought up as possibles as well along with Missouri State, North Florida (looking at adding football), Florida Gulf Coast, Florida A&M, Jackson State, Central Arkansas, SFA and some others. The three northeast schools are outside of the footprint, the rest are in the footprint. East Tennessee State is looking to add football, and Furman and Western Carolina could be other possibilities as well.

According to the article on ESPN NM State and Idaho are NOT official yet and the Sun Belt is looking at several possible scenarios.

The dominoes keep falling now. So will they stop here or add 2 more members? Why not New Mexico State??
