Western Kentucky University Conference RealignmentThe search to replace Tulsa concluded quickly with Western Kentucky slotted in to replace the departing school in Conference USA. As conference officials have known for months that Tulsa was the likely pick for the Big East football conference, the move was virtually seamless as WKU had been considered for the spot prior to Tulsa officially leaving.

The Sun Belt is expected to look at schools such as JMU, Liberty, Lamar and Sam Houston St. as replacements.

The old Big East is now Conference USA plus Connecticut, Cincinnati, South Florida and Temple and is named the American Athletic Conference or The American for short as AAC is too similar to ACC.

The Big East Conference is the Catholic 7 plus Butler (the only non-sectarian private school in the Big East), Creighton, and Xavier.
DePaul and St. John’s are Vincentian Catholic (Congregation of the Mission), Creighton, Georgetown, Marquette are Jesuit Catholic (Society of Jesus), Providence is Dominican Catholic (Order of Preachers), Seton Hall is Diocesan Catholic (Archdiocese of Newark), and Villanova University is Augustinian Catholic (Order of St. Augustine).

The American Athletic Conference only has 4 former Big East members currently (Connecticut, Cincinnati, South Florida, and Temple) and only 1 founding Big East Member (Connecticut).

The new Big East has 7 former original Big East Conference members and 4 founding Big East Members (Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John’s).

The original founding members of the original Big East were Boston College (now ACC), University of Connecticut (now in The American), Georgetown University (Current Big East), Providence College (Current Big East), Seton Hall University (Current Big East), St. John’s University (Current Big East), and Syracuse University (now in ACC). Villanova had a commitment to the Eastern Athletic Association (Eastern 8) (now the Atlantic 10 Conference) during the Big East’s founding year 1979 so they’re essentially a founding member. College of the Holy Cross is now in the Patriot League (Worcester, MA) turned down their invite as did Rutgers, The State University of New Jersery initially. Seton Hall was invited in Rutgers place.

So let me make sure I have all this:

The old Big East is now the new Big East.
The old Big East is now Conference USA, aka America 12.
The Conference USA is now the new Sun Belt.

    Is that about right :-)
