University of Massachusettes Amhearst UMass to Leave MAC in 2015UMass will leave the MAC conference following the 2015 season. The school joined the conference as a football-only member upon upgrading to FBS in 2011. Per the agreement with the MAC, if UMass were to reject an all-sports MAC invitation, that the conference could force the school to leave. Upon UMass rejecting that invitation and with Temple leaving for the American Athletic Conference, the MAC had less interest in a single football-only school.

UMass is expected to remain in FBS and participate as an FBS independent following the 2015 season, as an invitation from the Sun Belt, Conference USA or the AAC is not expected.

With UMass’ existing all-sports conference, the Atlantic 10, receiving 6 basketball tournament bids, the school opted to keep it’s other sports in a stronger conference than to join the MAC. As part of their football-only MAC membership, UMass has also been forced to schedule 4 MAC schools per season in basketball. That agreement will end immediately with the school’s 2015 departure set.

Navy might be the 16th team for the ACC with Notre Dame going in for all sports. U.Mass., Marshall and some others over there could go into AAC.

Drake and Valparaiso do not offer schoolies. It might have to be D2 schools that do. Central State Ohio wanted to move to D1. Maybe Xavier could turn their club team into a varsity team. Plus Cleveland State could add football in the future.

what i would love to see happen for the Mid American Eastern Michigan Central Michigan Western Michigan all get a travel partner with Northern Michigan Northern Illinois Could look towards Southern Illinois Eastern ILLINOIS WESTERN Illinois in all this as well mind you But how about Ball State they need Drake or Valparaiso coming in as well.Need 2 more OHIO SCHOOLS Youngstown State AND DAYTON FIT THE CORE VERY NICELY.There

Yeah. I know. I laughed at the idea. I could see buffalo, Stony Brook, Rice and Tulane get the invite before them since all four are AAU. Stony Brook Vs. Rutgers in the future could make a very good rivelry.

“Southern Illinois, Southern illinois-Edwardsville, Western Illinois and
Eastern Illinois could be thrush into FBS and into the Big 10 if their
    state politicians get their way.”

Do you have any clue what you’re talking about? The Big 10 requires all their schools to be part of the Association of American Universities when they join the conference.

The four Illinois colleges you named aren’t even close to being part of the AAU. Furthermore, those schools would bring nothing to any major conference, I’ve been to three of the four you listed. They’re small time Universities.

Furthermore, the Illinois State politicians don’t have any decision making who the Big 10 is, or isn’t going to accept as a member.

I could see UMass in the American, should Navy decide to stay an independent. This is a multi-bid league when it comes to the NCAA Tournament and adding a solid basketball program like the Minutemen have is what they need to bolster their RPI.

It was a miscarriage of justice SMU was overlooked for a bid over the likes of Xavier and Iowa, but their nonconference bottom feeder schedule did them in.

Now there is a road block for other schools that wants to go FBS, But, there might be one route that U. Mass. and other schools that want FBS, and that could be the WAC. Even Big West was at the level of FBS until several California schools dropped football and left Boise State and others in the lurch.

North Dakota State Where will they go? They are stuck in between between MWC and the MAC. Seems MWC could be the route.

Liberty? They want FBS, but nobody wants them.

James Madison Looked like MAC for them especially rumors about MAC going to 16 teams including some strong basketball schools to get both U. Mass. and Temple in for all sports.

Northern Iowa is upgrading their facilities to go to FBS. The only conference that fits was MAC.

Eastern Washington is upgrading their facilities to attract an FBS conference. Why have the best looking football stadium and surrounded areas unless they want to go to something better. They beat Oregon State as well.

Missouri State, after Northern Iowa AD announced the upgrade and FBS, Missouri State decided to fixed up their stadium as well. This points me to believe the MVC hybrid is on their last legs.

Delaware, they fired their coach and hired a new one, and doing some others things to improve their image.

Jacksonville State wants in the Sun Belt badly.

Alabama State also wanted to join. They already have a stadium that is FBS ready.

Lamar, poor Lamar could have gotten a spot in the Sun Belt if it was not for the problems with Idaho and New Mexico State.

Sam Houston State is another at a road block.

SFA announced a few years back after Sam Houston State announced a feasability to go FBS. So all 3 Texas schools could be blocked right now.

Towson, after their upset win over an FBS team last year, and their strong showing against an SEC school the year before, there were rumblings that they could go to FBS.

North Florida is looking at adding football, and they were on Benson’s list. Could the SBC schools holding off to add a school until they hear if UNF decides to add football? SBC wants to get back into Florida.

North Alabama is still in the waiting mode for an invite.

    Youngstown State

Stony Brook as another AAU schools like Buffalo could have helped the MAC to add more eastern schools to help U. Mass. out.

Eastern Kentucky is blocked as well.

These are more or less ready to go up.

Others that could go FBS are Wichita State which they could restart football, and would be attractive enough because of their football program.
South Dakota State, South Dakota and North Dakota could FBS to join North Dakota State.

Southern Illinois, Southern illinois-Edwardsville, Western Illinois and Eastern Illinois could be thrush into FBS and into the Big 10 if their state politicians get their way.

    Indiana State

Grand Canyon U. and Utah Valley

VCU with football, and attractive tv market.

    Furman

Now there are others, but where can they go? The WAC might be the only answer which means that both New Mexico State and Idaho could withdraw from the SBC to be part of the WAC again. The four Dakota schools can get an all sports invite to the WAC which will start hurting the Summit League.

The MVC schools that are ready could get football only invites. The other MVFC schools could get football only invite. Northern iowa and Missouri State could get an all sports invite to the WAC as well. With Chicago there.

The other schools along with U. Mass. could get football only invite to fill out the football scene. Now, if the Big 12 starts expansions and all that, then we could see U. Mass. and all these other schools find a better conference for all sports.

I do think the MAC commish went ahead and pulled the trigger in finding more eastern schools to help U. Mass. out. U. Mass. though Temple will be there when they join. Sad that U. Mass. got stuck in this situation.
