Former Cleveland State coach Sues
Former Cleveland State coach Mike Garland has sued the university, contending that athletic director Lee Reed fired him then announced that he had resigned.
Garland sued in the Ohio Court of Claims on Friday in Columbus seeking the salary and benefits from the two years left on his contract. Garland, whose salary was $130,000, went 23-60, including 10-18 last season. According to the lawsuit, Reed pressured Garland to resign, finally informing him March 30 that he was being terminated. Reed then reassigned him to the newly created position of special assistant to the athletic director. The suit says Reed made the appointment with the hope that Garland would resign from the new position. A letter from a Cleveland state lawyer to Garland's attorney says Garland was supposed to report to Reed's office by July 5. Reed said that Garland never showed up and does not work for the university. Reed declined to comment further. "The contract with Mr. Garland gave us the right to reassign," said Rob Wolff, an attorney representing Cleveland State. "We did and he opted not to accept the new position, which would have maintained his level of compensation."
