UCLA Student on Pac-10 Expansion

The UCLA Daily Bruin recently ran an editorial that I thought might be worth review. There are a few inaccurate facts, such as the writer mentioning the Pac-10 and Big Ten as the "only two BCS conferences to award a conference title based solely on the regular season". Seems that he forgot about the Big East which does not have a conference championship game either.

Most alarming is his suggestion that Fresno St. and TCU should be considered, and that the conference should be split into Southern and Northern divisions with Arizona and Arizona State being in the Northern division (yes, the same state that borders our southern neighbor Mexico).

It's a student paper, so we can cut the writer some slack. But here is the entire article.

Comments:
My Bruin friend has some good points but I would suggest an overall scheme for re-allignment. The Pac-10 needs to add two teams to the "North" and I would suggest Utah and Colorado. Utah provides the Salt Lake City Market and (a hopefully post-scandal) Colorado provides Denver and a natural rivalry. (BYU unfortunately has the "Sunday" problem which could severely damage the Pac-10 schedules.) The fallout would be simply repaired: The Big-12 would take Colorado State while the Mountain West would settle into a two-division format by adding Fresno State, Boise State, Hawai'i and either UTEP or Nevada. You now have two 12-team conferences with an extra pot of gold at the end. Also, the Mountain West could reasonably petition for inclusion in the BCS.

Of course, the WAC would be damaged and would probably have to merge with the Sun Belt.

Just a few thoughts--what do you think?

The Pac-10 does not need to expand and will not expand. Every conference does not need 12 members or a football championship game. The Pac-10 is fine like it is.

Each member plays each other every year in both football and basketball. The Pac-10 is the only BCS conference that can make this claim. Leave the Pac-10 alone.

I agree that the PAC-10 should expand. Conference's such as the ACC, Big East, Big 12, and SEC have conference championship games in football. Only the Big 10 and PAC-10 do not. The championship game will bring more money for the conference and the conference champion will get the automatic bid to a BCS bowl game.

Add Fresno State first. They are located in the central valley. Fresno State is having their stadium expanded to 70,000 seats for Pat Hill and their program has been consistant over the last several years. For example Fresno State saw its highest ranking ever in 2001 ranked number 8 in the country until they were beat by Boise State. In 2005 Fresno State was ranked in the top 25 going into the game against USC only to loose by eight points against the number one ranked team in the country.

The basketball program is on track too. The basketball team is no longer on probation. Steve Cleveland has the basketball team sitting at 9-2 with only a two point loss against Stanford on Tuesday night. And Fresno State filled up the Save Mart Center with over 15,000 fans the biggest crowd ever. It would sure be a nice for PAC-10 teams to play in.

Finally, Fresno is a good fit geographically speaking. They are centrally located within a 4 hour drive from LA and a 3 hour drive from San Francisco.

Add either Boise State or Hawaii to bring the conference up to 12 members. Boise State has won five stright conference championships in the WAC and has had thier second undefeated season in two years. Boise State is going to the Fiesta Bowl this year. The president of Boise State is having Boise State become a research institution to better position themselves to enter the PAC-10. And the football stadium is being expand to over 40,000. Boise is the fastest growing city in the northwest. Boise has a draw back though. In the remaining sports besides football, Boise State is not competitive.

Add Hawaii then. Hawaii has been in the top 25 and is playing against Arizona State in the Hawaii Bowl this year. Hawaii is also consistent in baseball and all other sports too.
