Army to Poinsettia Bowl...if they win 6

Bobby Ross and his Army Black Knights will be playing in a bowl game in a Navy town -- if they can win enough games this season.

Poinsettia Bowl executive director Bruce Binkowski and Army officials announced Tuesday that if the Black Knights are eligible at season's end, they will be invited to play a team from the Mountain West Conference on Dec. 19 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

"We couldn't be more pleased," Binkowski said in a conference call.

The invitation is good only if the Black Knights go at least 6-6. Based on Army's recent history, that could be a mighty big if. Army hasn't been to a bowl game since 1996, when it lost to Auburn, 32-29, in the Liberty Bowl.

"This was the best bowl for us, and we believe we have a great chance of being bowl-eligible," Army director of athletics Kevin Anderson said. "We have to come up with the wins, but we are guaranteed. It would just be fantastic. They all love coach Ross out there."

Ross was the hugely popular coach of the San Diego Chargers from 1992-96. His teams made three playoff appearances in five years, including reaching the Super Bowl after the 1994 season.

Ross has a history of turning around moribund teams. A decade after being chased out of San Diego, he remains the only coach to take the Chargers to the Super Bowl.

"I love it there. It's a great, great place. But again, first you've got to have six [wins]," Ross said. "It's a starting point. It's nice to be in a position and have the opportunity. It shows progress."

The Black Knights were 4-7 last year, their second under Ross, who took over a program in severe disarray. Army won only two games in his first season, started last season 0-6, then won four straight before losing to Navy.

Ross was forced out of San Diego after the 1996 season, losing a power struggle with then-general manager Bobby Beathard.

Poinsettia Bowl officials had spoken in the past about wanting to have Navy and Army in some kind of rotation. Navy played in the inaugural Poinsettia Bowl in December, beating Colorado State 51-30 before an announced crowd of 36,842.

Earlier this year, Navy reached an agreement with the Meineke Car Care Bowl that could put the Midshipmen into that game when they're eligible.

Under an NCAA bylaw that went into effect earlier this month, a team can go to a bowl game with a 6-6 record if a contract is in place before the first game of the season. Army opens Saturday night at Arkansas State.

Ross said he would tell his players about the bowl opportunity at practice later in the day but cautioned about looking too far ahead.

"It is added incentive, but it's such a long way away," Ross said. "I don't want to look too far down the road."

Big Bucks for an Ass Kicking

The University at Buffalo football team went 1-10 last season and did not score a touchdown until the fourth game. For nearly a decade, it has been considered one of the worst teams in college football.

Buffalo is just the kind of opponent some of the nation’s top-ranked teams are looking for — and are paying rapidly rising prices to play this season. The Bulls will travel this coming season to play Auburn, a national title contender, and Wisconsin, a perennial Big Ten Conference power. Although Buffalo appears destined to be humiliated, the university will receive a $600,000 appearance check for each game.

Scheduling easy victories is a tradition as timeless in college football as fight songs and homecoming. But after the National Collegiate Athletic Association approved the addition of a 12th regular-season game for the coming season, the appearance fees began climbing in a bidding war for games against college football’s flotsam and jetsam

ASU's Keller could be headed to Nebraska

Arizona State quarterback Sam Keller, who was named the Sun Devils' starting quarterback on Friday only to lose the job to sophomore Rudy Carpenter two days later, has been told by coach Dirk Koetter that he will be released from his scholarship, a source close to Keller said Monday night.

According to the source, the senior is seriously considering transferring to one of three schools, and Nebraska might currently be his top choice. The source said the quarterback could remain at Arizona State, but that the possibility of returning to the Sun Devils team "seems unlikely."

Nebraska Coach Collier Takes Butler AD Job

Barry Collier resigned as Nebraska's basketball coach Tuesday to become athletic director at Butler, where he coached basketball for 11 years.

Nebraska athletic director Steve Pederson announced the move and was to appear at a news conference later in the day with executive associate athletic director Marc Boehm.

"We wish him all the best in his new career path," Pederson said.

Collier, who coached at Butler from 1989-2000, has declined comment. He was the Bulldogs' winningest coach and was inducted into Butler's Hall of Fame on Saturday.

The 52-year-old Collier coached the Cornhuskers for six years. His job status was the subject of speculation last season before Pederson announced after the Big 12 tournament that Collier would be retained.

If he had been fired at the end of the season, it would have cost Nebraska $976,090 to buy out the last two years of his four-year contract. Collier will be taking a likely $400,000-plus salary cut with his move to Butler.

The Cornhuskers finished 19-13 last season but lost six of their last eight regular-season games to finish in sixth place in the Big 12 at 7-9. They knocked off Missouri and Oklahoma to reach the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament. The Huskers played in the NIT, losing to Hofstra.

Collier left Butler in 2000, going 196-132 with winning records in all but two years at the Indianapolis school. He guided the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament in 1997, 1998 and 2000. As a player at Butler, Collier was the team's co-MVP in 1975-76.

Even though it is early August, Nebraska is confident that they can land a quality head coach, according to a source. The most obvious candidate isn't likely to move in. Dana Altman of rival Creighton is at a basketball-crazed school, and he makes comparable money (reported by the Omaha World-Herald as being between $700,000 and $800,000).

High on Nebraska's list are Nevada's Mark Fox, a former Kansas State assistant, and Kent State's Jim Christian.

Fox, though, returns four of five starters to the Wolf Pack, including potential WAC MVP Nick Fazekas who withdrew from the NBA draft in June. Fox signed a five-year deal with a buyout of $250,000 prior to last season. His wife, Cindy, is an assistant athletic director at the school. Nevada is likely going to be picked as the favorite to win the WAC and get back to the NCAAs. The Wolf Pack will be without forward Demarshay Johnson for the first semester after he was ruled academically ineligible. A source close to Fox said he hasn't been contacted.

Christian, who was an assistant at Pitt in the late '90s when current Nebraska athletic director Steve Pederson and assistant AD Marc Boehm were at Pitt, may be more likely to make the jump at this stage. A source close to Christian said he would leave if Nebraska offered the job. Christian signed a seven-year contract following the Golden Flashes' 25-9 season and NCAA Tournament berth after winning the MAC tournament title game. Christian has a buyout of $250,000, as well.

The Huskers may also look at Rice coach Willis Wilson. But the focus, according to sources, could be Fox and Christian with the Huskers likely to move quickly once Collier tells them that he is out.

Potential Nebraska Coach Candidates:

Dana Altman - Creighton coach

Mark Fox - Nevada coach

Jim Christian - Kent St. coach

Willis Wilson - Rice coach

Lon Kruger - UNLV coach

Doug Novsek - Nebraska Assistant

Longshot:

Kevin McKenna - Creighton Assistant, former UNO coach
