It’s been a long time coming for Savannah St. After years without a home, they finally have gotten into the MEAC.

From the MEAC:

“The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced today that Savannah State University has been extended provisional membership to the MEAC beginning July 1, 2010, as voted on by the conference’s Council of Chief Executive Officers (CCEO’s).

A press conference is set for 5 p.m. on Friday, March 12, in the post game interview room of the Joel Coliseum. An additional press conference will take place on Wednesday, March 24 in Savannah, Georgia.

“We are pleased to extend membership and welcome Savannah State University to the MEAC family,” said MEAC Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas. “The addition of SSU keeps us in compliance with our long range and strategic plan of adding up to 14 members. Adding SSU to the membership completes the geographical footprint that bridges our South Carolina and Florida institutions.”

Commissioner Thomas added, “I would like to commend Dr. Yarbrough, President, Dr. Flythe, and the entire SSU family for all their hard work as we welcome this outstanding academic institution into the conference.”

As a provisional member, SSU must be in compliance with three (3) stipulations by September 1, 2011 before full membership status into the MEAC is granted. The stipulations include (1) student-athlete scholarships, (2) athletic budget, and (3) staffing.”

Savannah State’s long wait for conference affiliation could soon be over.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference lifted a moratorium on expansion last week, according to SSU vice president for administration Claud Flythe. The move clears the way for the presidents of the MEAC’s 12 universities to vote on Savannah State’s membership.

“In the near future, they will vote on who gets in,” Flythe said. “If we are accepted, we would become a full member immediately.”

MEAC officials are mum on the situation. The league’s communications office referred all questions to the commissioner, Dennis Thomas, and Thomas did not return telephone calls or respond to e-mails.

Immediate membership could make Savannah State eligible for league titles in every sport except football. The MEAC’s 2009 football schedule is already set – as is Savannah State’s, which has not been released – while those in other sports won’t be completed until later this year.

As with many break-ups, the final step in N.C. Central’s split with the CIAA came with a phone call Wednesday.

The Durham school had already submitted its strategic plan to the NCAA for its planned leap to Division I play and had been operating under those rules since June 1. All that was left was the call to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, formally notifying the Division II conference of historically black schools to finalize its departure

Saturday marked N.C. Central’s final day in the CIAA, signaling the impending start of a five-year reclassification process required by the NCAA.

“This university is going to grow, so our objective all along has been to keep pace with the university’s growth,” NCCU athletics director Bill Hayes said. “Needless to say, we’re very excited about the move.”

This fall will mark N.C. Central’s first season in D-I play, and the 14 men and women’s teams in the Eagles’ athletics program will start out competing as independents, without a conference affiliation. Central hopes to join the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and is awaiting confirmation from the historically black D-I league.

Ramping up to Division I competition has kept NCCU coaches and athletics administrators busy behind the scenes. N.C. Central coaches, for example, recently had to take the NCAA’s D-I recruiting test to show that they are familiar with the different restrictions from those handed D-II coaches.

For the staff of new football coach Mose Rison, who has assistant coaching experience already at the D-I level from Arizona, Stanford and elsewhere, that means no longer being able to invite recruits on campus for tryouts.

For about 15 N.C. Central student-athletes, it has meant taking extra summer courses to catch up to the stricter D-I academic requirements.

It also means more scholarships at the D-I level for a program whose budget is expected to jump from $2.4 million three years ago to about $6.5 million for the 2010-11 school year.

“You recruit much differently at this level,” Rison said of the costs of trying to restock a team that repeated as CIAA champions last fall and reached the second round of the D-II playoffs.

“You find yourself trying to reach out to a lot more kids, and so therefore there’s a lot more paperwork involved sending out brochures, feeding information to the student-athletes.”

Playing at the Div. I-AA level, Rison said the Eagles football team will play at least four “guarantee” games where opponents will pay N.C. Central for playing on the road. The Eagles will play six football games this year against D-II opponents, five against D-I opponents.

“Guarantee” games in football and basketball will help NCCU generate money to compete at the D-I level. It hopes to collect about $250,000 in guarantees this coming academic year, and as much as $450,000 in 2010-11, according to a consultant’s plan prepared for N.C. Central.

It also will increase the student athletic fee $70 — to $465 — to help fund the athletics department.

“It’s been a gradual increase,” said Ingrid Wicker-McCree, NCCU’s associate athletics director for internal operations. “We’re not trying to ride on the backs of our students.”

Hayes said he’s not concerned about his program’s ability to compete at the D-I level, this year or in the future.

“We’re quietly planning for 20, 30 years down the road,” he said.

At the conference’s annual spring meetings last month, the athletics directors voted on expansion, but Caldwell doesn’t know how that vote came out.

“I could have probably found out what the vote was, but I would much rather wait until everything becomes official with the President’s Council vote,” Caldwell said.

WSSU isn’t the only school awaiting word on joining the MEAC. According to reports, Savannah State also has applied to the conference.

SSU could be accepted as a conference member when the MEAC holds its spring meetings May 23-26 in Virginia Beach, Va. Expansion is expected to be among the topics discussed.

“We just have to wait it out now,” SSU athletic director Robert “Tony” O’Neal said.

SSU paid the MEAC a $10,000 non-refundable application fee last year. The campus visit was the next step in the process.

“This is our normal process, a site visit,” Thomas said before returning to Virginia Beach, Va., Monday night. “It’s a beautiful campus. And that’s all I can say. It would not be appropriate to comment any further.”

SSU has competed as an NCAA Division I Independent since leaving the Division II Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and moving to Division I (I-AA in football) in 2002. The Tigers are the only Division I-AA football team that is not a member of a conference.
