They may not survive. One of their largest rivalries is already dead, Appalachian State and Western Carolina, in the name of football and with Davidson headed out it could be the end. The CAA is looking to replace members and many of the Southern Conference teams are targets. Western Carolina is one of them and Elon is another. Unless the CAA takes a northern route and brings in some of their football schools, i.e. Maine and New Hampshire, but that seems unlikely at this point, the southern conference could take a final blow. I think the instability of the southern conference will cause the other schools in the Big South to stay put and if the Southern Conference is to survive, they might have to try and get some of the non scholarship football schools to change their stance and expand in that manner.

Davidson to A10 in 2014. Looks like the Southern Conference is dying after nearly 80 years. With Elon almost in the CAA the Southern Conference could end a la the WAC football. Expansion is going to continue until there are less conferences and less berths to the NCAA tournament. Things are still not finished and the Atlantic 10 is going to become the best of the lower conferences by taking their best and moving forward. I wonder where Wichita State will end up in all of this and how St. Louis and Dayton will respond.

With the Oakland move will this open the door for North Dakota to join the Summit and reunite all the Dakota schools? Or are they happy in the Big Sky? The geography is nice for either conference, but to continue the rivalry in the Great Plains States would be fun for them all. Although playing the Montana schools is nice they could still stay part of the Big Sky football. If they move what will the Big Sky do to balance the conference back to 12? Will another school leave to bring them back to 10? With Idaho coming aboard they are at 12, but for how long?
