Actually I'd skip this one, while there's points of good info it seems like some guy who roots for Troy has hijacked the thread and is just making himself look like a douchebag.

I imagine there's some sentiment out there for the Sun-Belt to have manditory participation in football.

If you fell that you want the Sun-Belt to become a 12-team football conference, that probably implies that you are in favor of:
UNO leaving (currently suffereing with a financial imbalance),
Denver leaving (I think the clock is sticking, they are on notice for not enough participation in Sun-Belt sports), and
UALR starting up FBS football or moving elsewhere....

I read somewhere that the Sun-Belt Conference office has a bit of incentive to try to be accomodating to UNO.
Some major NCAA Championship is scheduled to be held in New Orleans in 2010 or 2011 (I forget exactly what it is), and the Sun-Belt Conference is the designated "host", and had planned to use some UNO facilites for housing guests.
I'm sure there are alternatives available, and that this is a minor point.

There are NOT that many D-2, D-3 conferences to approach in the Louisiana Region, and instituional profile may truly be problematic.
In D-2, you've got the Gulf South (14 teams, a lot of them in Arkansas). D-2 still involves some athletic scholarships.
In D-3, you've got the American Southwest (15 primarily religious colleges, 12 in Texas) and the SCAC (12 little schools in 9 states from Colorado to Georgia).
You also have the D-3 UAA, which are larger urban institiurions. Very spread out, but might be the right profile for UNO....
They'd save on scholarships, though not necessarily on travel....

UAA are large research universities and are almost like the Ivy League in the exclusivity of their club. UNO would never get in. The American Southwest Conference would be their best bet. A few public universities in there already with Sul Ross State, UT-Dallas and UT-Tyler. SRS and UTT only have 2,000 and 5,000 students respectively but UTD has over 14,000. UNO is around 12,000. Also this would even up division to 8 and 8.

I hear UNO's rejections are based on being too BIG.

As anticipated,UNO and the SunBelt conference will part ways.

The SBC announced today that UNO will leave by 7-1-2010 and the league will waive any early withdrawal fees.
SBC Commish says that the league does not anticipate any more moves in the near term.
