One of the first things I did after joining this board was to compose a very long "analysis" of what future BYU future schedules would look like as an independent. For some reason (probably my own incompetence
), this post never showed up on the board. At first, I was annoyed, but now in light of the announcements BYU has made, I rather glad it went missing, since I would have looked like a fool if it had been posted!
Some quick thoughts on BYU's football plans:
- An eight year deal with ESPN -- I very much underestimated how interested ESPN would be in BYU football. Although no dollar amounts have been officially mentioned, the rumors say this contract is worth $800,000 to $1.2 million per year, which is a lot better than i thought they would get if true. My argument was that at least half of the games on a typical BYU schedule would be against fairly mediocre teams, so ESPN wouldn't be all that excited -- clearly wrong!
- A 6 game series with Notre Dame over (a rumored) 10 year period -- I did believe that Notre Dame would schedule BYU, but not nearly so often. My argument was that, with all of its long-standing rivalry games (USC, Michigan, Purdue, ...), ND would be reluctant to give a major commitment to another program, especially in light of their new "barnstorming" scheduling philosophy. (I figured BYU would be good to get 4 games with ND over ten years.) Pretty big whoops again!
- Scheduling agreements with the "WAC 6" (Utah St., Hawaii, San Jose St., Idaho, La Tech, and NM State) -- I argued that BYU would likely continue to schedule Utah St. (long history of playing each other) and Hawaii (history plus LDS presence in Hawaii plus 13th game in some seasons), but BYU would be rather reluctant to schedule many games against the other schools in this group (maybe two per year of the remaining four) due to the lack of history and unnattractive match-ups. At least for the short term, I've been proven wrong again!
Guess that's why I'm not an athletic director!
