not a stretch, something we've all had int he back of our minds: a merge would happen after everyone collects their exit fees, since one conference (MWC) has a couple schools leaving. So maybe that's the 24. Ideally, would be great to just swing UTEP and No. Texas to the "west" and UTSA and Rice in the east, to split up Texas as a focal point.

If they do move, I can't figure why 10/14 or why we don't hear the reasoning for 10/14 if a merger. Could it be that the MWC is merging into CUSA so that's why these are all CUSA adds? MWC added SJSU and USU, w/ the thinking just in case it doesn't pan out as a merger they have 10. I don't know what to think. I was just sold on us staying separate until that article. It could be the writer doesn't know sh*t, they did leave out La Tech.

It would make sense for C-USA to protect their future interests if the MWC thing doesn't pan out.

Like I said earlier, if Charlotte is going to eventually be a better candidate than a current Sun Belt school, screw the Sun Belt school and take Charlotte NOW before they rise up to the Big East's wish list.

Holy crap, I never realized MTSU was anywhere near Nashville. They should consider renaming themselves "Nashville Suburban State." They'd get more consideration for conference affiliation.

What the hell are you talking about? If it's a FULL MERGER, you got 24 teams in ONE NEW conference. If it's a "confederation" where two separate conferences combine for JUST FOOTBALL, they would play with 24 teams. In both scenarios, there would be four divisions of six.

If 14 of those members are currently C-USA schools and 10 are currently MWC schools, you have.... 24 members in one new conference. Why does it matter which conference they come from into the new, merged conference?

You wouldn't have anything f'd up.

Right now its MWC 10 and CUSA 14. 12/12 or 6/6/6/6 makes more sense. The problem is why are they doing it like this? MWC adds 2 CUSA adds 6?

MTSU gets you no where near Nashville and they have an extremely small following. MTSU is in Murfreesboro, which is a tiny city for all intents and purposes.

Just checked they are still in the Nashville Market, 35 miles outside of Nashville, Visalia is 1 hr from Fresno but they are the same market. I live in Reedley, 30 miles away from Fresno, still part of Fresno DMA

Why is it a problem? If they merge, it's 14 teams leaving C-USA and 10 teams leaving MWC for a brand new "Mountain USA" (or whatever) Conference. With 24 teams. They'll draw up divisions and play ball.

The bigger issue is if they are a 24-team league, one of them is Hawaii for football only. So they'd have 23 in other sports.

read this thread, the mwc thread and the merger thread. They need to say hey we are 1 or hey we are separate. How many times have we changed our thinking going off of CUSA adds and MWC adds or it's off or it's on again or maybe just for schedule. 24 isn't a problem as long as it's 6/6/6/6 14/10 isnt a problem as long as its CUSA separate from MWC.

If they could have ironed out all the issues, they'd have done it already.

It's an on-going discussion, but in the meantime, they have to each look out for their best interests in case it doesn't come together.

C-USA can't sit idly by working on the MWC thing and watch the Sun Belt, WAC and MAC make moves with Georgia State, UMass… maybe UTSA, Charlotte, etc.

Wow, must admit, I didn't see ODU coming. I saw ODU as a Sun Belt member.

I think this makes truth of the rumors that the CAA's football days are soon numbered. And I suspect ODU did this so they could get ahead of the much more attractive JMU and UDel programs, who are moving slowly in their upgrade discussions. Personally, I saw ODU as a MAC school.

I think this makes truth of the rumors that the CAA's football days are soon numbered. And I suspect ODU did this so they could get ahead of the much more attractive JMU and UDel programs, who are moving slowly in their upgrade discussions. Personally, I saw ODU as a MAC school.

I'm still stunned over the ODU choice. It still seems to me that Middle Tennessee would have been a better choice. ODU does get CUSA into Virginia but MTSU get them back into Tennessee. I think Georgia State has more growth potential than ODU and even think Arkansas State is an up and coming program. To me, having the best programs is more important. I would think having a program who may be capable of upsetting a team from a higher rated conference once every 5 to 10 years is better for a conference than having a team in Virginia or Charlotte who probably would have problems competing in the Sun Belt.

Obviously, it's all about markets and not about the stronger football program. Look at the choices, Charlotte, San Antonio and a team in Virginia. That's one school who has never played a game, one school who has played only 2 years and an FCS upgrade who has never won a championship over 3 Sun Belt schools who are capable of 7-5 seasons and going to bowls.

What I don't get is, if that's the criteria, then why Louisiana Tech over Georgia State (Atlanta) and Middle Tenn or Arkansas State (2 new states).
