re USM that I was doing in the MWC thread- thought it might be best to start a thread on subject.

Also re salary, most of these BCS schools pay their coaches most of the bucks through the athletic funds. To suggest 250K is a lot of money for a basketball coach is silly- in fact, my guess is that if that is his salary, it's in the lowest 20% tier in C-USA.
These schools like USM, Marshall, ECU---they play good football (well ECU used to) but there is a reason why you have to look at page 6 of the Sears cup standings to find their names- they have no money and don't invest in anything else. Perhaps the Rice's, Houston's and Tulane's would be better to stop investing in tennis and women's basketball and put all resources into football like the others do- but they choose not to and that's their choice.
The only team I see breaking out is Memphis- and that's because they have appeared to solidified football revenue in addition to basketball revenue (they used to draw 20K like the rest of c-usa in football- appears to have changed). I suspect their minor sports will improve in the next 5 years now that they can afford them. And that plus good football plus a market makes them a live play for a BCS league.

But not southern miss.

They won't touch 14. Not unless the Texas schools break away and form their own conference and they need to bulk up the membership. And how possible is that?
