The best place for Denver is the WCC, where the schools are private and the same size as DU. The challenge is that the WCC has said no due to distance, even when Denver was offering finincial incentives to join.

The next best place for DU is the WAC or MWC, but I don't see them adding non-football members.

The Big Sky adds no more interest in Denver than the Sun Belt schools.

Perhaps the best thing Denver can do is hopefully team up with other privates that might want a conference of their own...

I know the NCAA has frozen Division II-Division I upgrades until 2011 (everybody currently undergoing a move up is allowed to continue), but Division II might prove the most fertile ground.

Sadly, it's probably going to take an externally induced raid on the Missouri Valley to free up enough slots, i.e.:

MVC West - Denver, Colorado College, Regis, Wichita State, Oral Roberts, Oklahoma City
MVC East - Creighton, Drake, Northern Iowa, Southwest Baptist, Evansville, Bradley

Indiana State, Illinois State, Southern Illinois, and Missouri State are presumed to have been lured away in the fallout of realignment in the Big East, Atlantic 10, and any additions to the Bowl Subdivision.

Denver would be a smart add by the WAC or MWC as a non-football school. Maybe even smarter for the MWC.
