I don't think I properly described to this board how I described the scenario on Boise State's board... and this piece is a full-on unaware trigger. I did kind of explain the "artistic process" on the BYU thread.

Grow to 16. Watch it become a mess. BYU invites 7-8 schools to an airport to create the breakaway conference, very much like how the Mountain West was born in the first place.

I described how BYU could arrange things (WHO WOULD YOU INVITE TO THE AIRPORT- a game I've grown to love despite myself) in that thread. What the Mountain West needs to do is keep things to a minimum. That probably includes leaving BYU to fester.

Ironically if BYU had never left the MWC they’d be sitting pretty in a division that they wanted without Utah State.

UNM, CSU, AFA, WYO, BYU, Boise
Nevada, UNLV, SJSU, Fresno, SDSU, Hawaii/Gonzaga

But now assuming they invite a 14th, BYU’s division is significantly less appealing.

UTEP, UNM, CSU, AFA, WYO, BYU, Utah St
Boise, Nevada, UNLV, SJSU, Fresno, SDSU, Hawaii/Gonzaga

Another observation from the last two reads, or maybe better termed as food for thought: the talk in several places (geographical reach of AAC, C-USA, Sun Belt for instance) kind of indicates that football is no longer the prime driver of these discussions.

Football may still be the driver in P5 discussions. Past that, I see a change.

Even the P5 recent moves that seem like geographic stretches weren't horrible. The worst is probably West Virginia to the Big Twelve, and that's probably one of the complicating factors around Big Twelve expansion discussions.

Among the Group of Five, why take someone in when they don't bring in enough to offset the increased travel costs, especially if you have to bring in another school for numbers?

At lower levels, geography is almost the entire concern, coupled with school culture in some cases. The D2 Great Midwest Conference came about because several private schools saw a chance to reduce travel costs by joining together. In several cases this meant a less powerful conference. It's only when there's enough money to pay for the travel, and then some, that adding someone further away makes sense, and then only if someone else wouldn't be closer for the same gain.

Agreed !

A P5 school is raking in $30-$50 million/year between network TV deals and Conference TV network share.

Notre Dame a bit less from NBC and their share of non-NBC games.

Then a huge drop down to BYU and G5 who receive a few $$ million / year.
These schools are much more comparable to some FCS football programs than they are to P5 money.

This past year, UCF had an amazing season, and was competitive with the best teams in the nation ON THE FIELD.
But with G5 money not at all comparable to P5 money, they lost their coach, and it's just not sustainable.

The writing is on the wall. The AAC (American) and MWC are positioning themselves to be the 2nd tier beneath the Power Conferences.
And that involves renewed emphasis on the #2 money sport - men's basketball.
