this article highlights one of the reasons why realignment happened...tv $$$...it seems there are rumblings regarding some of the tv contract conditions as a point of contention that could affect the next round of realignment when the tv contracts expires in the early 2020s...

Anyone have thoughts on 'logistics' if BYU comes back to the MWC? Such as: byu income vs conf. income, who else to add for even numbers, whether to add an Oly sport school to increase RPI and SOS, other side issues??

The obvious add, and about the only one possible, for FB is New Mexico State. I don't think that any addition of a non-FBS playing school is likely to be tied up with this, although it's possible one might be announced at the same time if it were ready and BYU to MWC happens. As logical as it is, I'm skeptical about it, because I think BYU is pretty determined to go P5 or on their own, and the MWC are still peeved about BYU leaving.

The fundamental issue for BYU, the MWC, and really NMSU, Idaho, and even the Pac 12 is the relative lack of FBS schools west of the Big 12 footprint. Any possible conference configuration is going to be spread out, and if other factors get taken into account (secularity, say, or quality of program) it gets worse.

In my humble opinion (which isn't worth much), it appears hat BYU's plan is to continue with the status quo until they get into a P5 (or P4 conference) OR the next re-shuffling passes them by and it becomes obvious that "it ain't gonna happen".

If they are confronted with the latter situation, I think they'd make a move.

What COULD happen is that as expiration of the Big XII GoR approaches, the other 4 conferences start carving up the Big XII and each go to 16 teams.
Assuming ND goes all-in to the ACC, the ACC will have one remaining slot (UConn, WVU, or [long shot] Texas), the B1G will have 2 slots to fill, the SEC will have 2 slots to fill, and the PAC will have 4 openings. That's 9 openings.

Who would those slots go to / who will BYU be competing with....
Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas will be 1, 2, 3
WVU has a decent shot at either ACC or SEC.
UConn probably ACC only.
OSU and KSU depending on the state of their programs to maybe the PAC.
Texas Tech / Houston could be paired with Texas in the PAC.
Would A&M block Texas form joining the SEC ? If the SEC wanted another Texas school, they could go with Houston (much bigger market then Lubbock (Texas Tech).

ISU may be left out - Ames is small market, and Iowa already gives the B1G the state of Iowa.
K State might sneak in somewhere if a Kansas / KU pairing is desired, but the state of Kansas sure doesn't provide that many eyeballs.
Right at this moment, the wheels have fallen off of Baylor.
TCU is a rather small school, but their football is very competitive as long as Gary Patterson is there (he won't last forever).

This is what BYU has to compete with. Utah seems undesirable for ACC, B1G, SEC, so that leaves only he PAC, which seems to be run by liberal-leaning academics.
If BYU was a public non-religious college, it's athletics program would have them in the PAC already. They are going to need to do a selling job.

If we get to a P4, I think the AAC and MWC are well-established as "the second tier". The Big XII left-overs and BYU would probably be invited to those 2 conferences, and the Big XII would cease to exist. At this point, BYU and the MWC could re-unite.

This may all go down in 2023 or so....
That's 5 years off, a LOT can happen between now and then.
It sure seems like FBS football and the D-1 basketball tournament are moving more and more toward the major conferences keeping all the revenue for themselves, and they could conceivably pull their football and men's BB out of the NCAA or establish their own NCAA division with their own sanctioning body. All the court cases about paying athletes etc. apply primarily to the big boys, and that activity could drive the next big realignment.

UTEP has been talking to the MWC for a long time now. If they add BYU and take another exsisting FBS school UTEP is their choice if they don’t get a bigger name (like Western AAC school, or maybe a wild card like Rice or UTSA). NMSU might get added to CUSA or the SBC in the fallout but they’d be high unlikely to get into the MWC over UTEP.
