IF Idaho and NMST are cut loose they should set up an agreement among the independents and contract with a conference close to them for home and away games.

Independents - Idaho, NMST, Army, BYU, UMASS. Schedule each other for 4 games.

Contract with a close Conference for 4 or 5 games as a scheduling agreement and access to their low tier bowls like ND with the ACC. If they can't get a bowl the 5 teams should apply as a unit for a bowl or 2 with all of the bowls that currently exist. Several bowls had to take 5 and 7 teams this year. This group could act as an independent unit to fill those bowls if the conferences could not fill their bowl commitments.

1. Idaho - MWC
2. NMST - CUSA - West Schools
3. Army - AAC
4. UMASS - AAC
5. BYU - AAC / MWC

Schedule 1 FCS school at home if needed.

Schedule 1 or 2 P5 games a year. Schedule a body bag game away for money if they have to annually to fill out the schedule and help with expenses. Idaho, NMST, and UMASS might have to do this but Army and BYU really would not as P5 schools especially lower end P5 schools will schedule them home and away.

Fill in the rest of the schedule with other G5 home and away games spread out over the G5 Conferences to complete a 12 game schedule.

Finally the 5 independents minus ND should ban together for a TV contract with for what ever they can get with ESPN or the new Fox Sports network for filler in their program scheduling. BYU and Army should have some pull there as BYU is already with ESPN and Army has a contract with CBS.

NMSU and Idaho should work closely together at the very least

Idaho has already cranked out a great OOC schedule for the next 7 years. They only have 5 openings left to fill:

2016- Mont. St, Washington, Wash St, UNLV
2017- UNLV, W. Mich, Nevada, Missouri
2018- Fresno St, Wyoming, Florida, N. Illinois
2019- Penn St, Wyoming, San Jose St
2020- San Jose St, Temple
2021- Indiana, Nevada, San Jose St
2022- Indiana, Old Dominion, San Jose St

What's more amazing is that they only have one FCS program scheduled, and that's in 2016.

You're assuming they remain in the Sun Belt. If they get kicked out they'll need an additional 8 games a year.

You could pencil in UMass and NMSU every year as their schedules are still free, and maybe at least 1 game a year from BYU/Army but even then you need 5 more games during conference play to fill out a schedule.

I'm not assuming anything....I'm just commenting on how well their AD has been doing at securing their future.
Having 23 of your possible 28 OOC games already accounted for...is a pretty solid move on Idaho's part especially with some of the quality schools they have chosen. That way...if like you propose....the SBC gives them the boot....they will only have to fill-in for their conference spots.

7yrs x 4 OOC = 28 games
7yrs x 8 Conf = 56 games

They have 23 OOC games divided by 84 total spots = 27% already finished.
Add in 1 game a year with NMSU which is 7 games >> 30 / 84 = 36% already finished.

36% of your 7 year schedule already completed isn't too bad for a school like Idaho....who a couple of years back had NMSU on their schedule twice in one year before the SBC came to the rescue and gave them some schools to fill in with instead.

I have a feeling that Montana got in before the Idaho decision to address their predicament.

Based on some of their comments over the last few years....they knew that dark clouds were on the horizon. I believe improving their OOC schedule might be one of the tools they are using to either stabilize their free fall and/or look more attractive to a new conference.

Keeping the number of FCS games to a minimum should help their bottom line. While playing every close conference except the B12 allows them to travel well, that's if Idaho travels well to begin with??

They are in a tough spot....but, they seem to be making the most out of it at this point in time.

I would assume they have prepared for the outcomes possible. Which means they have some idea of what they would do as an Indy. I've got to figure they beg every close MWC school for a yearly game and hope that a(1) PAC school will help them out every third year or so.
UMass and BYU have some openings after 2017. But, Army is really full.

ps.

Seeing the opposite side of the coin with NMSU.
Between 2016-2021(24 spots)...they have 10 games scheduled. And 4 of that 10 are next season. Maybe, NMSU knows something that Idaho doesn't??

If they do end up cut loose, Idaho and NMSU could both potentially host two FCS schools a year in order to get some home dates and fill out the schedule. My guess is that they are going to wait and try to get as many FBS schools on the calendar as possible before they start calling the ADs at FCS schools. I'm still hoping that they can convince some Big Sky schools to come up and try to form a conference.

I don't know the BigSky all that well.....who are the two or three most likely to move up?

Montana and Montana St would seem the most ready. North Dakota St and South Dakota St could too. If other schools start see pieces moving it might give the California schools the confidence to move too.

Idaho, NMSU, UMass and Army should all sat as FBS independents
They should work together to play each other (that would be three games a year)
They should approach the B1G and the SEC as these conferences will no longer schedule FCS games.
• that is 28 teams from these two conferences playing one game each against one of the four indies generating 7 games per indies
• without being in a G5 conference the indies season schedule would be more flexible than any G5 in terms of availability to play the p5
• playing against p5 is more lucrative than against G5
• if the indies want to get better they need to play against P5 rather than G5s
• strength of schedule would be pretty good

So that is 10 games season thus
The last two could be against an FCS or two, or an FCS and a G5

How many of those are home games?
