If the MWC wants Boise State’s performance in the 2008-10 seasons to be included in the formula that determines whether the MWC receives an automatic BCS bid for the next cycle of games — and it sure as heck does — then the Broncos must be a member of the MWC in 2011.

And for them to be a member in 2011, they must be invited by July 1, 2010.

What makes this a very interesting situation is Boise st accepting the invitation to the MWC, then a year later the
PAC 10 and BIG 12 raid away the best MWC schools. That leaves the MWC to raid the WAC, which leaves the MWC
back to being the old WAC conference with different name and no BCS with it's best school gone. No significant gain
for Boise st.

I believe you are correct about the July 1 thing.

IIRC, that is an NCAA requirement to process the change in time for the football season the following year.

When the ACC raided the Big East in 2003, they had to get the move completed by June 30, 2003. That let Miami and VaTech play football in the ACC in 2004. BC didn't officially accept an invitation to be the 12th ACC team until fall of 2003, and they had to wait until 2005 to play football in the ACC.

Off topic - how does this affect invitation date for Big Ten expansion ?
Clearly the Big Ten would want to have expansion invitations accepted, finalized, and filed with the NCAA no later than June 30, 2011. This would let new teams join for football in 2012, except it may not be feasible in terms of re-working schedules.... so 2013 might be more realistic. If the BE schools have a 27 month period, does this back their preferred date 3 months earlier (March 31, 2011?) in order to play Big Ten football in 2013 ?

If BSU was invited and the MWC reached the criteria to get a bCS bid, wouldn't that last until the next evaluation period? In other words, if the MWC qualifies after this next football season with say, bSU getting an invite this summer...wouldn't that qualify the MWC for a (5 year?) period? so if they lost say, Utah, or even TCU, wouldn't they still be in the BCS bucket for a few years?

I think that if they join the MWC has a bid locked up for 4 years. 2012-2015. After that I guess they'd get reevaluated just like the BE after losing members. So if Utah goes to the P10 and BYU goes to the B12. Does the MWC get back to 10? If yes, then Houston and Fresno St. should be the next 2 on deck. There is also potential for Colorado St. or New Mexico to join the B12.

Future Boise St. posts can be put in the Mountain West Conference thread, not that they are a member. Thanks.
