BYU announced that it was leaving the MWC after Utah accepted an invite to the PAC12 in 2010, and as of 2011 BYU has officially become a football independent with all other sports in the WCC, many have been speculating where they will eventually end up, the Big 12, PAC16, Big East, MWC, or remain a fb ind like ND for years to come...

BYU has a large share of the Salt Lake City and greater Utah markets but they also have a large national following due to their affiliation with the Church of LDS. Even though they have yet to make a BCS Bowl, BYU's football is considered by most to be just as good as the other AQs and is regularly ranked in the top 25. BYU basketball is one of the few elite programs West of the Mississippi and would be a boost to any conference. BYU also hosts a slew of other collegiate programs that would fit into nearly any conference.

The PAC12 passed over BYU and instead took Colorado and Utah, however if they expand to 16 many speculate that BYU may have a shot depending on what the Texas/Oklahoma schools do...

The Big 12 once considered adding BYU back in the 90's, and now that they are down to 10 many expect that BYU and possibly another western school could fit right in.

The Big East recently offered BYU a football only invitation, which they declined, and many believe that a full invite may be forthcoming.

The Mountain West Conference looked like it was about to fall apart with Utah leaving for the PAC12 and TCU having conversations with the Big East, add in the bad TV contract and all the extra restrictions on BYU's ability to broadcast or rebroadcast on its network. and its apparent why BYU left. However with the recent additions of Boise St, Nevada, Fresno St, and football only member Hawaii the MWC is looking strong again, if they could somehow manage to allow BYU to keep its contracts with ESPN and its own broadcasting right for BYUTV, I don't see a reason why BYU wouldn't rejoin its old conference that could be on the verge of getting an AQ. The non-football WCC is nice but the only national team in it is Gonzaga, who could be also added to the MWC to offset Hawaii as a football only member in all other sports.

I guess that's a good starting point for this thread...

BYU may already have a Big 12 invite...just working out how their ESPN deal and BYUtv will fit into the Big12's model...

Twice we've heard rumors involving BYU, twice they appear to be false. Looks like BYU is happy where it is as an Independent. Frankly, that might be the best spot for them. They can schedule Utah, Utah State, Notre Dame, Boise State, 2-3 Pac-12 teams, and 2-3 other national games every year, then fill out the rest of the schedule with WAC teams.

You make it sound so much easier than it (indy scheduling) actually is. It's all well and good to put out thoughts like some P12 schools here, some say B12 schools there. But there are conferences. Meaning that after a few weeks into the season each year, most schools go on an all-conference schedule. Some have flexible weeks here and there, but it's not easy.

Absolutely right concerning scheduling difficulties for BYU. The SLC newspapers have made many references in recent months to the weak late-season slate that BYU is playing, resulting in no drama down the stretch. That's why I thought the school was leaning toward the Big East.

The BYU lawyers must be a piece of work. There have been numerous comments about how obstinate they are and how difficult it is to deal with them.

Well, they didn't have much time to get a schedule together for this year after announcing the move out of the MWC. Look at their future schedules (www.fbschedules.com), next year they are at Georgia Tech, at Utah, at Boise State, at Notre Dame, and host Oregon State, Washington State, Hawaii, and Utah State (in-state rival). Only Idaho, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Weber State are stinkers. Which makes this schedule comparable to anything they would've had in the MWC. In 2013 they lose Oregon State but add Texas and Houston. In 2014 lose Notre Dame, Washington State and add UCF, Southern Miss. In 2015 and beyond, there is still plenty of time to get a good schedule together.

So Quinn and Westwolf, what do you think BYU actually wants? As much fun as it is to read rumors and anonymously sourced articles on this site, watching BYU basically reject TWO BCS conferences seems to indicate that they want to be independent. And by the looks of it they seem to be doing just fine putting together future schedules.

Good point about the '12 schedule. Had not realized it was so strong. I see a lot of press & TV coverage concerning BYU in the summer, and I can't tell what they want to do.

The Holy War "paused" for '14 and '15. HUGE hole in BYU's schedule now.

Dennis Dodd blog article(previously posted in another thread)with comments from PAC 12 Commish regarding fact that BYU and other FB Indies other than ND have so far apparently not been accounted for in 7th/contract bowl access proposal. If these Indies were "frozen out" of this 7th bowl could/would this force BYU to join a conference for FB?Link at http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootbal ... off-status

Notre Dame was able to get the Orange Bowl tie-in, but BYU has been locked out of getting an automatic spot in this new format. Are they already on the phone with the Big 12? Could they consider going back to the Mountain West? Would the Mountain West even accept them?

If they join a conf. B12 or BE they won't have to look deeper
