Sorry gang. It's been another crazy week for me. I'm finding it harder and harder to vote in these polls because it's so difficult to differentiate between teams. I tend to favor teams who defeated better opponents as opposed to teams who have lots of wins against weak competition. But here's my ballot and the results after tallying our 3 votes. BePcr and Hibbett please feel free to submit a vote for this week too--I'll just add yours in and adjust:

Muskie's ballot:
ECU
Colorado St
Marshall
Boise St
NIU
UCF
Utah St
GA Southern
Nevada
Cincinnati
Air Force
Toledo
Houston
Memphis
Middle Tenn

The Go5 Top 15:
1. Marshall 43 (2)
2. Colorado St 42
3. ECU 41 (1)
4. Boise St 35
5. GA Southern 31
6. NIU 30
7. Utah St 23
8. UCF 21
9. Air Force 19
10. Bowling Green 14
11. Middle Tenn 13
12. Toledo 11
13. Cincinnati 10
14. Nevada 9
15. Memphis 7

also receiving votes: Houston 4, South Alabama 4, LA Tech 3.

Just a few thoughts and observations:

We have a new #1 in Marshall. Personally I think ECU and Colorado St are both better and they went out and proved themselves against Power 5 schools while Marshall has feasted on cupcakes.

Apparently I hate Bowling Green--which is ironic because I almost went there. I had them outside of my top 15 (and actually thought that CMU and WMU were more impressive) but the other voters had them 8th and 10th.

There was also mixed feeling about UCF as two voters had them 6th and the third had them 15th.

Poor Memphis--they have beaten Middle Tenn and Cincinnati (who also beat Toledo) but all 3 ended up ranked higher.

I like Nevada more than most. I rewarded them for their win over Power 5 Washington St and cut them some slack for the brutal cross division schedule--(they play ranked opponents Boise St, Colorado St, and Air Force as well as a tough BYU team that beat two Power 5 schools and who is better than their record indicates.)

Here are our updated results:

1. Marshall 57 (2)
2. ECU 56 (2)
3. Colorado St 54
4. Boise St 48
5. NIU 41
6. GA Southern 37

12. Toledo 12
T-13. Nevada 11
T-13. Houston 11
15. Cincinnati

also receiving votes: Memphis 7, South Alabama 7, LA Tech 3

observations--the race for #1 got a whole lot tighter. Things got worse for Memphis as they slid out of the Top 15 and Houston jumped in. GA Southern slid some too--surrendering 5th place to NIU. There is also a noted drop off between 9th place and 10th place.

Here are updated results after Norwich Cat voted:

1 Marshall 58
2 Colorado St 56
3 Boise St 53
4. Air Force 42
5 NIU 40
6 GA South 38
7 ECU 37
8 Utah St 33
9 Nevada 25
10 Bowling Green 19
11 Memphis 18
12 Houston 16
13 ULL 11
14 Temple 8
T-15 Toledo 6
T-15 LA Tech 6

also receiving votes: WMU 5, Cincy 4, CMU 4, UCF 1

My thoughts: I don't understand why GA Southern is getting so much love; yes they've beat a bunch of crappy weak Sunbelt teams and nearly beat two Power 5 opponents but ECU has an identical record, plays in a tougher conference, and BEAT 2 POWER 5 OPPONENTS!

Yeah, I understand your view on East Carolina, but their showing over the last couple of weeks has gone down hill. Teams they should have pounded ugly - they barely beat. 31-21 wins over both 3-6 USF, and 2-6 UConn do not generate sympathy and the 20-10 loss to 5-3 Temple bumped them. Yes Georgia Southern has beaten some weak SBC schools, but the scores are showing the teams strength - 69-31 over Georgia St., and 47-24 over Idaho. these were not 10 pt wins like East Carolina posted. Georgia Southern also only lost to NC St. by a single point 23-24! Too bad Georgia Southern is not bowl eligible this year, or we could see these two settle it in a bowl game against each other.

Here's my top 15 ballot:

1. Colorado St (9-1)
2. Boise St (7-2)
3. Marshall (9-0)
4. Utah St (7-3)
5. ECU (6-2)
6. NIU (7-2)
7. Nevada (6-3)
8. Memphis (6-3)
9. Air Force (7-2)
10. GA Southern (8-2)
11. UCF (5-3)
12. Cincinnati (5-3)
13. Toledo (6-3)
14. WMU (6-3)
15. Bowling Green (6-3)

I was admittedly hard on C-USA and the Sunbelt this week. UL Lafayette and LA Tech were both under consideration for me but I ultimately felt that the MAC and American schools had better resumes and, if placed head to head on a neutral field, that the southern schools would lose.

As long as there aren't more than 70 bowl eligible teams Georgia Southern will get to go to a bowl game. Based on where a lot of the bubble teams are I think there will be fewer than 70 and the Eagles will get to go to a bowl and probably will play a MAC school in one of the two bowls in Alabama. Considering the depth of the MAC this year they ought to get a decent opponent.
