Now that TCU, Boise State, Houston, SMU, UCF, and San Diego State have left the Mountain West and Conference USA, it looks like all of the mid-major conferences have an equal amount of talent.
At this point the 5 mid-major conference champions would be Northern Illinois, Arkansas State, Southern Mississippi, Wyoming, and Louisiana Tech. I don't think any of the remaining mid-major teams have any shot at ever making a BCS bowl.
I'm wondering if the mid-major conferences should form a new division between FBS and FCS. Or maybe the mid-major teams could form their own playoff with the top 8 mid-major teams competing for a mid major national championship.
Maybe the winner of the tournament goes to the Fiesta or Cotton Bowl? Conference USA and the Mountain West are merging into a superconference for football.
Maybe the MAC and Sun Belt should also consider merging together to form a superconference. Anybody got any thoughts on how the mid-major conferences can stay competitive?

We've talked about this a couple of times...

If the big six drops the AQ status and reverts back to bowl tie-ins, then the MWC/CUSA, WAC, MAC, SBC only have 4 guaranteed games tied-in with the big boys... Little Caesar's (MAC v B1G) Liberty (CUSA v SEC) Beef O Brady (CUSA v BE) Independence (MWC v ACC) and Las Vegas and New Mexico (both MWC v PAC).

The rest are against each other in sub tier bowl games with low payouts, so what's the point...

The Big Six could easily drop the mid majors from their bowl lineup and simply pair the 6 teams playing the little guys against each other and shut them out completely...

What the mid majors should do is start a playoff, and consolidate into 4 conferences with a few upgrades, a West (WAC/MWC+UTEP), South (Texas to Alabama), East (Florida to NE) and North (MAC).

Let's be real, very few people watch the mid major v mid major bowls, I would bet that more people watch the FCS playoffs...so why not have 4 conference champs (this year Northern Illinois, Arkansas St, Southern Miss, and LA Tech/TCU [or Wyoming after realignment]) play a quick 4 (or 8 or even 16) team playoff, this has to be more satisfying than getting owed by a mediocre AQ team.

This year Southern Miss is playing Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl, TCU is playing LA Tech in the Poinsettia Bowl, Utah St is playing Ohio in the Idaho Potato Bowl, Wyoming is playing Temple in the New Mexico Bowl, Toledo is playing Air Force in the Military Bowl, San Diego St is playing ULL in the NOLA Bowl, FIU is playing Marshall in the Beef O Brady Bowl, Tulsa is playing BYU in the Armed Forces Bowl, and Arkansas St is playing Northern Illinois in the Go Daddy.com Bowl...beside Boise St, Houston, and SMU (who are the only non-AQs that will be going to a decent bowl game and to the Big East in 2013) this covers nearly every major 7 win midmajor that placed 1st-4th in their conference (except WMU who you could swap with Marshall and WKU who you could swap with BYU). So why not organize this process a little bit and turn these bad bowls into a playoff?

What could have been...
Southern Miss v Wyoming
Northern Illinois v Arkansas St

Or a 16 team playoff with all bowl eligible non-AQs (minus future AQs and a 6-6 Marshall)

Ohio v WKU

Tulsa v Western Michigan

LA Tech v FIU
Northern Illinois v Air Force
