Still More from Chip Brown on possible future Big 12 expansion at
http://texas.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1366140&PT=2The Big 12 made a very good hire with the new commissioner Bob Bowlsby. This guy really seems level headed and has a calm demeanor about him that shows good traits with leadership. This is especially true in college football alignments where the NCAA has little control and there is no clear commissioner such as the NFL to keep everyone in line.
http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_/id ... -on-agendaBowlsby wants to take a pause with expansion, however, as we have learned over the years that is not easy to pause expansion where schools are always looking for a better opportunity to generate additional money.
While I agree with 10 team conferences and round robin in major revenue sports, it is not easy to keep this format.
It will be an interesting leadership test for Bowlsby to navigate through the exercise of expansion as it is almost imminent the Big 12 will get back to 12 schools sooner than later.
There is always going to be the 800 pound gorilla in the room wearing burnt orange. With the signing of Tier rights, this gorilla is restrained from leaving the room, however, it does make it important to ensure the gorilla is kept calm and orderly. It is also important to understand the gorilla is a star attraction and needs a lot of attention. Good Leaders are accustomed to these type of personalities and are able to use this to their advantage.
If you want something approved, getting buy in from Texas becomes more of an asset and less of liability.
Texas wants to remain at 10 schools and we all know that is not going to be possible, so which two schools will make Texas happy is the first step to getting something accomplished.
Oklahoma wants to expand back to 12. This really helps keep the other strong voice in the room happing if a Florida State just drops into your lap (i.e. Texas A&M to the SEC)
Notre Dame is a Texas preference type school and would most likely be approved. The problem Notre Dame is going to hold out with independence with the BCS final four most likely keeping one at large bid open for non conference champions.
First big question if you get Florida State as number 11, which school would be a good fit for number 12?
If Florida State and Notre Dame are a no go, which two schools could Texas be convinced of that would bring the conference back to full set of 12.
Since Oklahoma prefers Louisville, can Texas be convinced Louisville is a good addition.
I would predict Texas would agree on both Florida State and Louisville keeping everyone in the conference happy with expansion back to 12.
Florida State will be in no position to demand a travel partner unless the Big 12 likes the school.
With the above issues Florida State could option to remain in the ACC or for other reasons as well..
If yes, then the Big 12 may just want to take Cincinnati for 12 and cal it a day.
The Big 12 is back to 12 schools which somehow in today’s college world demonstrates stability. Perception is everything in college football.
Amazing how a conference football championship game has captured our imagination and at the same time caused so many issues with conference alignments.
