Sec, one thing to consider is that the ACC does seem willing to move to 16, but only if it means Notre Dame being #15. That's the hold up which as the Beast and B10 know, can last forever.

It is in the Big XII's interest to expand. Were the PAC to expand, and I think they will, it will be taken out of the Big XII's expense. Texas? Maybe. OU? Possible. But at the very least, I think programs like Kansas are just as vulnerable.

I believe any movement done by the PAC will probably be mirrored by the B1G and vice-versa. The B1G will have no problems finding programs either west, east, or south of its current footprint. For the PAC, it's either within the footprint, or east.

I don't get how there isn't quality with programs like BYU, Air Force, UNM, Tulane, or Rice, and why it's so smart or logical to gun for a program like Louisville that identifies itself as an eastern school. Louisville helps make short-term money, but Louisville is no long-term investment.

A conference waiting on ND is like a jilted lover sitting by the phone and waste time for fifteen years for the former prom queen to return his call, while all this time he could be dating others.

I believe the ACC is going to 16 with or without Notre Dame. They will wait for the details oof the playoff, get Pitt and Syracuse playing, then wait to see wait Notre dame does with it TV contract. Then they will expand with 2 of the 3, Notre Dame, Rutgers and UConn. Obvious Notre Dame is the first choice. Time frame is 2016 to 2020.

An article on the front page Arizona Republic this Sunday morning discussed the comeback of the Fiesta bowl and how the new leadership changes have improved the bowls reputation with BCS. The article also discussed the Fiesta Bowl's desire to keep the association with the Big 12 regardless of how the new BCS Final four football playoff decides to use or not use the existing four BCS bowls in the new four team playoff format.

This continues to demonstrate the heath of the Big 12 and desires of major bowls to have Big 12 tie ins.

Regardless of how the new BCS system is implemented using existing bowls or playing semi final games at the higher ranked team home fields, strength of schedule is going to be a critical factor to gain access to one of these final four of college football bids.

It just appears to be a better option for the Big 12 to remain with 10 members and not take a chance on watering the league down by expanding to 12 or especially 14 schools.

If the BCS decides to avoid using existing four bowls in favor of higher ranked home teams hosting the games and championship game played in mutual site, the Big 12 would have a very good bowl line up and may have to drop a bowl unless the conference expands.

BCS Semi final game in most years for the regular season Big 12 champion in most likely Fiesta Bowl or neutral site
Fiesta Bowl if not part of final four playoff sites
Cotton
Alamo
Holiday
Inisght
Texas
Pinstripe

I am guessing the Pinstripe may get the ax if the BCS decides to avoid using existing bowls and the Big 12 keeps tie ins with the Phoenix based Fiesta Bowl.

I have no doubts that they're either going to 16, whether to stay at 16 or to prepare for 14 (or 12 again, who knows). UConn is the obvious one. ND would make their lives easier, but I believe they'll probably take Cincy, Rutgers, or WVU should ND not come through.

I'm a B1G fan, and this go-around might be the closest the B1G has gotten to ND. Even perhaps further than the 1999 near-miss. Personally? The B1G can do better, and will, were they to select a program that truly desires being in the B1G, shares the same institutional goals as the B1G, and isn't going to feel "regionalized" (or whatever stupid ND fans and alums feel about the conference) by playing such programs. To me, this is what schools like Pitt, Rutgers, SUNY Buffalo, Kansas, Iowa State, and Missouri want. Let them in. Or, if UMD, UVA, or GT are truly players...let them in. It's clear to many within ND that they don't feel the B1G doesn't do it for them athletically or institutionally. I for one believe they may be right...and the ACC is probably more up their alley, even if, schedule-wise, ND can play just about everyone it currently does now that the B1G and PAC have worked out a deal to schedule each other. The question is, will those darn divas just drop the elitism and commit...anywhere?

That leaves the B12 with filling in spots 11 and 12. BYU, AFA, Louisville...a more "out there" choice, I think, is USF?

I agree with Seanbo. I think the ACC will eventually get to 16 with UConn and Rutgers. They are the most logical fits and offer the best academics and solid athletics. It also ties the conference together geographically as well.

The Big 12, I just see them expanding back to 12 with Louisville and Cincinnati and staying there. The options outside of Cincy are BYU, USF, Boise, Air Force, etc.

Very doubtful that the ACC would bother expanding w.o. ND. Certainly not Rutgers. No one wants Rutgers.

Rutgers is all about market. If the ACC can get UConn to go along with Pitt, Cuse, Duke, UNC and exploit the NYC basketball market then they would invite RU any minute.

Rutgers fans have to wait for Rutgers, the institution, to bleed out the old "Rutgers 1000" sorts within them. No way in hell does a major conference that prides itself in strong academics and athletics allow Rutgers to sip from golden chalice when so many within the school feel so above athletics. And yes, it's the sort of spite that has kept Rutgers out of a better conference for some time. It's no closer to NYC now than it was 30+ years ago.

I know Rutgers is coming along. But, in all reality, this is still a fight that the governor, BoG, president, and AD have to make to the public and those within the institution that the mint NJ is dropping on supporting Rutgers is a worthwhile endeavor. Somehow, counterarguments sympathetic to the Rutgers 1000 mission finds their way into a major rag and finds traction. They're losing, but it's still a touchy fight.

I know simple economics should sink in...it's not in NJ. Not within Rutgers fully. And it's hurting them.

Interesting SI article on possible Notre Dame implications with the new BCS four team playoff. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/w ... index.html

Nothing basically new here that we have not already discussed. It is interesting to see national publications start to dive into the possible scenarios that Notre Dame may take if changing conferences.

Less say Notre Dame did become interested in the possibility of joining the Big 12 for all sports and playing some Big 12 football games and of course the Big 12 agreed to taking Notre Dame without a full football commitment, how would the Big 12 align to accommodate this change?

Would the Big 12 just expand to 11 with Notre Dame and not worry about a 12th school since there will be no championship game without full football membership from Notre Dame?

Would the Big 12 expand back to 12 schools with another all sports member and continue to play round robin football which would require 10 conference games. Would the conference expand with 11 schools that play football and be able to continue with 9 conference games logistically or be required to revert back to the standard 8 games the Big 10 used when they had only 11 members?

Playing a 10 conference game schedule would provide even number of home and away games. If the intent on some games with Notre Dame would include the University of Texas each year, that would only leave Texas with one out of conference game per year. Same for other Big 12 schools in years Notre Dame would be included on the football schedule as part of an agreement to take Notre Dame for all sports except football.

Would basketball work better with 12 schools?

If the Big 12 landed Notre Dame and decided to expand back to a full set of 12 schools, would Louisville be the obvious choice or would Rutgers become a better schools if Notre Dame were in the mix. Remember the subway fans in NYC supporting Notre Dame would love to continue to have the school play a team in the NYC area.

Maybe Notre Dame will just stay put in the Big East. If Notre Dame is forced to change conference based on BCS playoff requiring only conference champions or Notre Dame just wants to get out of the new Big East with all the new all sports schools additions, things could get interesting concerning decisions the Big 12 would need to make with expansion.

I can see ND preferring to find their "Big East arrangement" in another conference, one that doesn't look like the old C-USA.

And the Big 12 would be the best option for them, given the circumstances.

But the Big 12 would have to go 11 football, 12 all-sports. Because no school is going to accept an "all but football" agreement with the Big 12 who is Big 12 calibre in other sports, with the possible exception of BYU.
