That's a nice editorial, tute79.
Trying to equalize payouts among P5 schools may make some conferences take unnecessary risks and over-reach. They are not equal in numbers, demographics, sports popularity, weather factors, priorities, etc.
It is amazing how revenue collected from so many athletic departments is reinvested within, including helping to keep Olympic- type sports afloat. However, big portions are dumped into bigger facilities and more modernization, though some of it is not particularly warranted.
Coaching salaries in fb and bb are getting out of control to absurd levels. Also, extensions, paying off fired coaches, attracting expensive assistants, are all part of eating up distributed revenue and the profits therein. Few have money In the black being retained.
They are not policing themselves. These conferences need to put caps on salaries, conference sizes, and percentage of revenue collected that goes directly into the athletic programs.
Better academic and ethical standards for recruiting need to be applied for the FBS/P5 levels. Letting corporate media and major corporate advertisers buying increasing influence and control will ultimately do big damage. College Presidents and Conference Commissioners are not NFL and NBA billionaire team owners.
