excellent post, Metropolitan. The areas north of the Mason Dixon line/Ohio River and east of the Mississippi River dominated the nation's population and professional sports for so many years.

Interesting to note: of all current sports franchises west of the Mississippi River, the one in place in the location the longest is, of course, the St. Louis Cardinals. Second oldest (measured by either founding, 1945, or joining the NFL, 1950) are the San Francisco 49ers. They were followed by the SF Giants and LA Dodgers in 1958.

And how many teams in the Great Lakes region that is the bedrock of the Big Ten conference have been in existence before the 49ers were born (which makes them older than the whole NBA, BTW):

Green Bay: Packers
Chicago: Cubs, White Sox, Bears, Blackhawks
Detroit: Tigers, Lions, Red Wings
Cleveland: Indians
Cincinnati: Reds

As Tigershake2 will tell you, Notre Dame aint gonna join any Big Ten. They are helping the Big East with they schedule. Villanova is being groomed too and Army and Navy and the East America will be helped by Notre Dame play more with them. See, Notre Dame is not like other schools that join money grabbing conferences, with Notre Dames religious doctrine they believe in helping others and the east is the sophisticated part of the country that recognizes and appreciates it all the most.

If I were in the BE, I'd trot out that "with friends like these" line right quick.

It wasn't until the Dodgers and Giants moved out to California, plus exansion teams in Seattle (twice, Pilots then Mariners), Houston (twice--Colt 45's and Astros),

Just a note that Houston only had one MLB expansion team. The Colt 45s just renamed themselves Astros when they opened the Astrodome.

If Notre Dame would not join the Big Ten because the conference would not cut them special deals in terms of revenue, telecast exposure, scheduling, and veto power; then, is not that the same as saying Notre Dame demands preferential treatment and is unwilling to accept equal access?

Notre Dame boasts about the large percentage of hispanic students now attending.

Shall they also adapt policies reflective of equal opportunity in terms of their interaction with NCAA brethern? Then again, maybe Notre Dame has self-styled themselves, with help from their enablers, as the recipients of the affirmative action corollary.

"Veto Power" is something I never heard before.
As a Big Ten fan who followed the dealings, I have to think that one is a myth.

The only special deal ND was going to get from the B10 was flexibility in scheduling ooc games (i.e. they could schedule USC in their traditional late season time frame). ND was going to join, but the alumni got hysterical and so the trustees voted not to join despite the favorable recommendation of the President, AD and faculty (all prior to the alumni freaking out).
