This is in agreement with ONE INTERPRETATION of the the NCAA's charter.

The investigators CLAIM this was entirely an academic issue, and not an athletics issue.
How convenient for UNC !

I can live with that, however, then let's please end the charade that men's football and basketball players are required to be students.
Let's end the charade that big time athletics (primarily FB and Men's BB at P5 schools) has anything to do with the educational mission of the university.
It's been a huge joke for decades now.
There are some FB and mens BB players who do graduate with a meaningful degree, at P5 institutions, no doubt.
But if they don't want the college education, why are they even forced to attend class ?
(Well, at UNC, they DIDN'T have to attend class).

In the past, the NCAA has intervened when players cheated to be / remain academically eligible to play sports.
Now schools have a legal pathway to keep players eligible, without "cheating".
A full cirricullum of utter bull-shit classes used to exist - basket-weaving, "Communications"....
NOW it's gone to non-existent "pretend" classes !

Maybe big time sports should be regarded as Professional.
Maybe the NCAA should retreat, and only concern themselves with rules and refereeing.
Otherwise, they are over-whelmed.

I would like to know what federal laws have been broken.
The FBI broke the story.

This behavior is clearly unethical and commits all kinds of NCAA recruiting violations.
But there are references to criminal prosecution, and nowhere do they identify the Federal crime(s) that occurred.

When Pitino's contract lawsuit winds up in court (assuming he and U of Louisville don't settle), the university will allege that Pitino directly knew and condoned the bribery OR he lost institutional control of his subordinates. Certainly grounds for dismissal and contract termination, but criminal ?

Not to change the subject (but I will) - in previous actions against universities (such as NCAA vs. Penn State) - the NCAA used a "catch-all" violation - "Loss of Institutional Control" (rather vague and seemingly allows the NCAA to expand the scope of their investigations as needed to encompass ANYTHING related to University operations). Curious as to why the NCAA didn't use that to claim jurisdiction over the fake classes.

All I can imagine is that UNC is part of the good-old-boy network. Or as Tark said: the NCAA is so mad at Kentucky, they are REALLY going to punish Cleveland State !!!!

The panel was a bunch of political figures and others
with interest conflicts. They missed the opportunity
to make a real statement and passed the buck.
