I hate reality TV.
But Big Brother is NOT reality TV. There is nothing real about people between the age of 20-35 living 75 days without TV, internet, cell phones, mail, email, texting, facebook, twitter, or any kind of media at all. Even the Amish have iPhones.
If Stephen King was told to produce a game show without killing anyone or torturing anyone (and some of their competitions for power are close to torture), this would be what he came up with after they rejected The Running Man or The Long Walk.
It's a sociology experiment. It's the Art of War without physical combat or weapons. It's pyschological warfare.
Last night, one dude who's ridiculously good (he's actually not playing this season, there's four former players in the house as "coaches" playing for a side pot of money) told his sweet little southern belle player: "This isn't about making friends. It's about half a million dollars. You're just getting to know these people so you can exploit them later. It's chess with human pieces. You move them where you want them, then you take them out. And the people who play emotionally are the easiest to move. So if you've got a crush on this guy, you're done. Game Over. If you don't have a crush on him, keep doing what you're doing. Because if your hands are around him all the time, he won't notice the week you're holding a knife until you've stabbed him in the back. "
Which is a lot like conference realignment: Paranoia and power, backroom politics as everyone does what's best for them to get more money.
