Hello everyone as you can tell im new here but i have some information that you guys might be interested in. I just finished watching Sportscenters discussion on the ACC-Notre Dame saga and realized something very interesting. They mentioned that the ACC's television football contract expires in 2004 and that they had been talking with NBC. Could the ACC be trying to steal the Irish's TV network from them and therefore forcing them into a conference?

a distinct possibility. Depends on how much the ACC would want for broadcasting rights though.

Part of the ACC's idea in expansion was that "new players" would be in the market for NCAA fb when they renewed their contract. I remember that discussion as it was part of their revenue projections. It wouldn't just be ABC/ESPN. So there may be some validity to your speculation.

It could happen and to get Notre Dame its going to take Millions.

FOX offered Miami it's own TV contract if it went indy. So it's safe to assume that they would still be players for the ACC. Figure that they have more to offer since they hav eno other college FB contracts with NBC close behind.

ACCSeahawk, welcome aboard.

While it may not be listed front an center among the goals and objectives of the broadcasting deals the ACC would hope to make, you can bet one of the conditions would be a clause indicated prohibitions on other options for the network. Could they ask NBC/Fox/whoever to say "sign us and you agree not to sign ND to an independent deal" ? They can ask, but it may not be approved. However, the ACC can certainly ask that their games get the preferred scheduling, top crews, etc. Networks could readily agree to this and again further limit the options and value of ND telecasts.

This will be the real rub. ND will always have national appeal, but they're command of the market will be relative to their performance. At least a conference offers the network the flexibility to showcase the teams that are doing well and drawing interest at that time, as well as options among feature games for the week. From the advertisers perspective, that flexibility often beats the prospect of broadcasting a struggling ND as they host Navy!

And don't forget the ND contract is for their home games only. 6-8 games a year. A conference contract can give you 13-14 games a year and steady weekend scheduling.

Will the plans that are already in place for the two Labor Day Monday Night Football FSU/Miami games the next couple of years affect this in anyway?

I think 1 thing is for sure, if the ACC starts trying to do things like forcing Notre Dame into doing things they will never get them. Notre Dame would probably join the Big East and get them a fat TV contract with another network.

The ACC may be in real trouble with expansion that started back with the Va Tech fisaco.

Trying to lure Notre Dame is a sure sign the TV championship game projections are not going to come close the predicted results.

One thing for sure, Notre Dame has integrity. Remember that Notre Dame was the team that alerted the Big East in the early summer of the ACC plans for expansion. ACC contacted Notre Dame before Miami and BC.

The ACC has to be embarrassed by a public turn down by Notre Dame to ESPN. Regardless if the ACC was behind the Charolotte paper rumor on Notre Dame, it does nothing to promote the intergrity of the ACC.

If the current revenue sharing drops after next year when 11 teams are in the mix, could the ACC become unstable as a conference?

This latest stunt by the ACC to try and get Notre Dame shows signs of panic.

The ACC may be forced to take an lower profile team just to make up some funding with a championship game. East Carolina don't run away just yet.

IN that paragraph you mentioned another group who is probably behind the scenes influencing what is going on. That is ESPN. They have always had an affinity for the Big East. Ibet the Big East has been consulting with them on numbers for their new conference and whom to invite. You know the Big East may have wanted a school like Xavier or Dayton other than Marquette and Depaul since they are closer. I bet ESPN gave them the numbers and said it would be better with Depaul and Marquette. I would not be surprised if with the new super lineup they can wrestle the ACC's double header wednesday from them and become the most showed conference on that network.

The ACC is just about ready to walk past ND. They will go to Boston College, extend an invite, and BC will come in a NewYork minute (or Boston minute :D).

This will again throw the BigEast into disarray, but the winner could be So.Fla. who will get a late panic invite to the BigEast to play football (although the BEast should swallow hard and force Nova to take in Temple, it won't happen).

This will force CUSA to find another team...and go hard after Marshall again...although they'll probably have to swallow hard and take LaTech.

But it's BC to the ACC by November...that's where I'm putting my money.
8-)

isnt it ironic that the acc could have gotten bc this past summer and avoided all of this craziness and possible bad publicity to come.

When BC got out the court case in COnnecticut they signed an agreement not to leave. The ACC will get Tulane or Vanderbilt to mix with Duke and Wake Forest. At the beginning of the week swingferd thought he was getting ND.
