I have always thought it would be fun if Notre Dame lead a charge and formed a conference on their own that was a hybrid of friends of the conference and the old Big East.

Something like

Gold Division
Notre Dame
Navy
Army
Boston College
Rutgers
Syracuse

Big East Division
Pitt
West Virginia
Maryland
Cincinatti
Temple
UConn

Most based for football (obviously Navy and Army wouldn't join conference for basketball) but it would give Notre Dame yearly conference matchups with classic rivals Navy, BC, and Pitt and still leave 4 non-conference games for the classic Stanford, USC, Michigan, Mich St and any other games.

Well, that ship has sailed. And partly due to Notre Dame standing on the sidelines as an independent, instead of jumping into the Big East (or other) football conference.

If you're a ND fan, they can probably still have some of that if they were to join the ACC for FB.
I would imagine the ACC would go to 16, and Notre Dame would be placed in the North and play BC and Pitt every year.

They would have room in their schedule for 3-4 OOC games of their choice.
(the usual suspects: Navy, USC, Stanford, Michigan, MSU, Purdue....)

I have no special knowledge, but get the vibe this is somewhat likely to happen. Notre Dame has signed a GoR with the ACC, and if Notre Dame football joins a conference between now and 2036, they are contractually obligated to join the ACC. Staying independent seems to have lost all it's advantages. The alumni who embrace independence will eventually get old and die off.... Younger alumni aren't likely to oppose joining a conference...
