USC Upstate is heading to the Big South Conference, effective 2018-19.
http://www.goupstate.com/news/20171115/ ... conference

The reason for the move is pretty obvious. From the article:
“We have one opponent less than 300 miles away in the Atlantic Sun. There is only one opponent more than 300 miles away in the Big South.”

The Big South went from 10 to 12, with additions of Hampton and USC-Upstate.

IMPORTANTLY - the Big South solidified football with the addition of Hampton (FCS football). (USC-Upstate does not play football).

Big South Football was getting critically low on member schools,
with Liberty moving their FB to FBS Independent, and Presbyterian threatening to go non-scholly Pioneer League.
Therefore adding Hampton was critical to fixing that.

Just to clarify, a "move to the Pioneer League" probably only involves PC's football program.
All other sports aren't necessarily going anywhere, HOWEVER, Title IX compliance might force some changes to keep male / female sports scholarship ratio in line.
