I look at this, think of the other sports, and shake my head. Of course the WAC as is wasn't going to last. And I'd argue a partnership with the Big Sky that keeps the conference going and, with a few other changes, leads to this...

Denver
Grand Canyon
New Mexico State
Northern Arizona
Northern Colorado
Southern Utah
Texas El Paso
Utah Valley

(Somehow, you lure Denver from the Summit and trade UTRGV for UTEP... one would like to think there was enough money in the world... sigh)

Also

Eastern Washington
Idaho
Idaho State
Montana
Montana State
North Dakota
Portland State
Sacramento State
Seattle U
Weber State

(Yet I'm accounting so much for the stubbornness of North Dakota that I don't move them into the Summit in Denver's place)

...and then the college sports gods foist enough money on UC San Diego and, check this out, UC Merced that Bakersfield can finally get into the Big West.

There's gotta be a better way. It probably starts with designated football-only conferences below the P5 so that people can play prestige while having compact and sane conferences for everything else. Even then, sigh.

Yeah, cross UTEP off that list. They ain't leaving C-USA for the WAC/Big Sky

So many options in regards with finding the right schools within many aspects such as academics, marketing, geographic footprint to make a suitable core (mostly within the Western U.S.), yet the WAC hasn't yet managed to attempt offering an invite.

Welcome aboard to California Baptist. However, I believe that the WAC can do better than just add only one school on its expansion plan.

I'm actually surprised that they are waiting a year to join. They are not moving until June 2018.

Does the pac west have a buyout if not given a year?

Good move for the WAC. The conference of mis-fit teams needs to add at least 2 more for stability.....

On the Horizon we have:
NMSU has got to find a long-term home for their FB team's stability, maybe Big Sky, maybe Summit / MVFC...
CSU-Bakersfield wants to be in the Big West.
Seattle wants to be in the WCC, but perhaps being blocked by Gonzaga.
UMKC - NOBODY can figure out why they left the geographically-friendly Summit for the far-flung WAC...
Chicago State - kicked out of the Summit for administrative lapses - the WAC took them in when the were desperate for members....

The WAC has become the bottom rung of D-1. At one time it was the Mid-Con (now the Summit).
The Summit has gained stability and respectability, by shedding out-liers and replacing them with clusters of rival schools that share a common vision
and athletics budget, and sit reasonably close to one another geographically.
The WAC should probably set themselves up to be a home for D2->D1 move-ups that don't play football and are located on West Coast / Southwest.

I over-did it a bit by giving Cal Baptist a welcome to the WAC in advance. I'll admit that. But at the same time, that might be also a sign for the WAC itself to keep on searching for more expansion members to keep at least stability, geographic footprint-wise and market-wise; just in case if the other schools (i.e.: Chicago St., UMKC, New Mexico St.) would decide to move onto regional-friendly conferences. Because so far, I do agree with most of the points tute79 said.

I was more surprised that they are waiting a year to begin their transition. I'd figure that the WAC would want them joining as soon as possible. They need schools as soon as possible.
