Agreed. At this point, at least bring in UTPA as the 6th member.

wasn't UC San Diego looking for at the Big west earlier? They have no football why isn't the wac looking at them. At that matter any thoughts on why there hasn't been any movement on the rest of the great west schools? While it might not look pretty it would get the right amount of division 1 schools or at least a little breathing room.

UCSD turned down a student fee increase to move to D1. They were virtually a lock for the Big West so I don't think the WAC's desperation changes anything.

I thought UCSD said it was Big West or nothing for them.

I believe they crunched travel budget numbers and concluded that the Big West was the only Division I conference they could afford to be a member of.

Clearly the WAC is desperate for members at this point.

But Chicago State and New Jersey Tech (the two lone available independents in D-1) are real geographical out-liers. (in fact UTPA is stretching things abit, as well).

If the WAC invites Chicago State, they may find it's impossible to get rid of them later, if and when they get to a point where there are plenty of western D-1 candidates,
and the WAC wants a tighter footprint.
Right now, Chicago State is rather undesired. I assume they are cleaning up their act, since being asked to withdraw from the Summit League (Mid-Con at the time) several years ago.

So there are now two (2) members of the Great West, NJIT and Chicago State (neither a western school).
Does that conference dis-band at some point here ? It was never really a conference, in my mind, just a scheduling alliance that the NCAA has never really recognized as a conference....

The ever-shrinkng NAIA has been shutting down conferences as schools move up to NCAA or reconsolidate into other conferences
(dissolving the Dakota Athletic Conf., American Mid-East Conf., Trans-South Athletic Conf.).
NAIA provides a pseudo-conference for abandoned independents and NAIA newbies called the Association of Independent Institutions (AII).
Maybe that is the function now served by the Great West, but at 2 schools, it's rather silly.

If the WAC does indeed survive I think they really have to look to DII rather than NJIT and Chicago St to keep their league alive. Any DII school in the West or Southwest would surely get the ok from the WAC at this point. Unfortunately for the WAC most of the DII conferences in that region are fairly stable so getting someone to make the jump will not be an easy task.

And we know NJIT now has a really good chance for getting into a real conference so the Great West is effectively dead.

And the WAC still looks pretty bad.

ironically Seattle held out of the Great West to avoid the teams that have been invited to the WAC

Seattle wants into the WCC. For them, the best case scenario is to up their game athletically with some facility, staffing etc investments; win the WAC in men's hoops a few times while Denver wins the Summit and hope the WCC says "ok, now it's time to add them both."
