That's over with, but there may still be bad blood with Summit's commissioner Tom Douple.

Before North Dakota jumps conferences, they HAVE to have a plan for their football program.
The MVFC is the right place, but they apparently aren't crazy about expanding.

For football, it would be the right place for North Dakota to be in the MVFC, if:

a.) Expand, and lose one or two members in any possible way, such as having some of their top schools moving to the FBS or joining suitable regional conferences (like Eastern Illinois (a former Summit/Mid-Con member school in the early 90s) did when they joined the OVC in 1996, splitting from Western Illinois)

b.) Split both groups within the MVFC by letting both the Summit and the MVC sponsor football as a conference sport:

MVC fb: Illinois St., Indiana St., Northern Iowa, Missouri St., Southern Illinois, Youngstown St. (affiliate); +1 more
Summit fb: North Dakota St., South Dakota St., South Dakota, Western Illinois; North Dakota, +2 more

Both leagues offering football makes some sense. But Youngstown would belong with the MVFC group (Eastern Schools). Believe it only takes 6 schools to be an automatic qualifier in the FCS. So bringing in North Dakota and perhaps Northern Colorado or Eastern Illinois or both would work for the Summit

You're right on one thing. Youngstown St should be in the MVC core group. I apologize. But I had re-fix that small mistake on my original post.

The Grand Forks (ND) Herald is reporting that the University of North Dakota is in active negotiations to move from the Big Sky to the Summit/MVFC. Discussion appears to be related to timing, 17/18 or 18/19. Should be a good move for UND both in terms of going to stronger conferences and better geographical fit.

Youngstown State has at times in the past had a pretty decent football team. Ron Jaworski, Cliff Stoudt, etc..... OK that's been a while !
I was surprised that Akron moved up to D-1A (now FBS) and the MAC, rather than Youngstown State.
Maybe at some point, Youngstown State and say Marshall (now that CUSA TV money is non-existent) move to the MAC.
MVFC football would then be 5 Summit (incuding North Dakota) and 5 MVC schools.

Big Sky (minus North Dakota) would be 11 full members + 2 football affiliates.
Would they invite NMSU to drop to FCS and join as a full member for 12 + 2 ?
NMSU (rather isolated geographically) has to know that their options are now VERY limited, since the Big XII expansion was nixed,
and there won't be any "holes" developing in CUSA or the Sun-Belt.

I think the Big Sky is a much better situation than the unstable WAC + FBS independent.
Idaho came to that conclusion....

Terrific news for North Dakota !

Long overdue !!!!

This will drop the Big Sky down to 11 schools + 2 football affiliates.
Can we expect them to invite NMSU for all sports to get to 12/14 ?
I think they'd be a good fit there....
If NMSU is smart, they'd realize their FBS aspirations are a losing proposition at this point.
Yeah, they'd be down in the far SE corner of the Big Sky footprint,
but they are pretty far from most schools other than UTEP and UTRGV, right ?

Wasn't Portland state looking at dropping football a few years ago? I think they are increasing tuition this year. Maybe it's the reason why the WAC went after Calling baptist.
