Utah Valley State will be upgrading it's sports to Division 1. We already know about the upgrades at NDSU, SDSU and Northern Colorado.

We also know that a new 1AA football-only conference is in the works for 5 current 1AA independant schools in the west, with NDSU and SDSU as the 6th and 7th members once they upgrade. (Cal-Poly and UC Davis as in the Big West for other sports, UNCo is an independant, St. Mary's is in the WCC for other sports)

So my question is this: Could these upgrades team up to form a NEW conference for all-sports except football?

Here are the members you could have:

Utah Valley State
Northern Colorado
NDSU
SDSU
TX-Pan American
TX A&M - Corp Chris
*Southern Utah
*Denver

The question here, is....

A) Are there any other potential Division 1 upgrades? North Dakota, South Dakota?

B) Would schools such as Southern Utah and Denver, who are currently located on the outskirts of their conferences' footprint consider joining a new league?

Utah Valley State may as well be in the same city as Brigham Young (Orem and Provo have a slightly dodgy boundary IIRC). Point being that there's no way in Hades or the Celestial Kingdom that they'll ever sponsor football.

That's not a deal breaker for this conference proposal, but it does need more football members. That might make Denver feel more welcome, however.

Seems to me that Southern Utah would jump at this opportunity, but I don't know how happy they are in the Mid-Con.

I get the feeling (and a feeling is all I've got here) that UND and ? USD ? wouldn't sit still for long if NDSU and SDSU do make the jump. Having them come on board would be preferable to throwing Texas schools into this mix, partially because of the geography.

I was implying a conference that does nto sponsor football, not that UVSU should add football. I've clarifies in the original post.

The formation of a new conference is TOTALLY dependant upon NCAA basketball. The only place where there is significant money in athletics for the non-1A football schools is in basketball.

The current alignment of 31 conference champs and 34 at-large berths and a play-in game was developed after the split of Mtn. West off of WAC created the 31st conference. Now logic dictates you just go from 30-34 (champs to at-large) in the tourney to 31-33, but the BIG conferences are about money and NOT logic. Hence, the play-in game we now have for the two "worst" seeds, which will ALWAYS be small conference champs, so the big conference would not lose an at-large spot, which is worth a LOT of $$$!

With this background, how do you think the big conferences are going to respond to a potential 32nd conference, especially one that is out West in the Rockies? ??? (rhetorical question)

There is a critical mass developing again though, as more schools move up...They have to go somewhere. The Mid-Con can't take everybody, can they? ;)
8-)

Why not form the above mentioned conference and add St. Mary's, Cal Poly and UC Davis as football only members? Fits right in with the football conference plans that are already in the works.

USD and UND may make the move to D-I someday, but not anytime soon.
