With UNO pulling the plug on their 'club team'....it is looking doubtful that UNO will begin their 'scholarship level' team.

Could you please explain how UNO not having a team...affects A&M CC for the 'better'?

On the plus side.....UNO did....just start a women's sand volleyball squad.

As UNO was recovering from the havoc of Hurrican Katrina, they were faced with (after their special exemption expired)
having to meet an NCAA D-1 requirement for participation in a minimum number of sports.

Someone pointed out that the easy thing to do, would be to have men's and women's volleyball, and men's and women's sand volleyball.
The thinking - schools that do this typcially have the same group of athletes playing both sports, so it's cheap for the school.....

I don't have a problem with UNO not sponsoring fb., at this point. The Southland has the opportunity, with ORU leaving, to grab whatever number of fb schools that they want. They can pick up one more...or stay with an odd number.

Either way it goes...I don't see much of this having any affect on A&M CC. They will continue to plug away at their existing sports without issue.

A&M-CC initially promised to start football when it joined the Southland.

Really? I never knew about that fact, even when TAMU-CC was a very young and newly athletic program, dating back their Indy days from 1999-2000. However, ever since joining the Southland in 2005-06 or 2006-07, no plans have been developed yet; just like UTA's fb re-instation plans when leaving the Southland to join the FBS world (first the WAC for only 1 season and now the Sun Belt).

Hopefully, this will help them develop much faster and start getting some solid recruits.

Alright, big news for all you Lamar doubters. ...I mean all US Lamar doubters.

Anyway.....Lamar now has their own TV network. The Big Red Sports Network can now launch Lamar up to the AAC. Or, was that the Sun Belt? Either way...watch for it on your local cable network. I figure it will be a National phenomena in no time.

Is there any possibility of Tarleton St. moving to the Sunbelt?

Good point. But realistically, in order for Tarleton St. to join to the D-I ranks, they must start in the Southland (SLC); but that's if any or some of its longtimers such as S.F. Austin or S. Houston or Lamar (individually or in a group) would move up to the SBC first.

I doubt that they move to the SBC. But, the Southland might be giving them some attention. Since, Tar. State is dropping well over $25 million into their facilities. While, also spending quite a bit on other campus building projects. They should be completed in the next year or so, which would set them up nicely to be the final addition to the SLC roster.

IIRC, Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word should both be half way through with their four year reclassification process. Which means the timing should be right for the final addition to the conference(2016 or 2017), which would give them 12 for fb and 2 for Oly sports.

I believe that Sam Houston should be making the jump up to FBS soon. Their scheduling has been outstanding and they have won their conference, something like, four out of the last five seasons. They also play a great brand of bb at Sam Houston.
Personally, I feel Sam Houston would be an excellent addition to pair up with Texas State and the Louisiana schools. Sam is relatively close to the Houston market, they are competitive, they reside in a recruiting hot-bed, and they win. What more could a conference ask for, right?

So would the Southland be interested in NMSU? It would put them at 14 members and 12 for football. Then there is also UTRGV who would also like to get that same invite and start a football team.

Keep in mind that UTRGV was a former member of the Southland in the past (although athletically, it was under the UTPA banner at that time). But the former Broncs only sponsored one sport (men's tennis) in the SLC from 2000-01 to 2012-13. Then again, should UTRGV gets an invite with full membership by the SLC to meet up the 14/12 model, it might cause two fb.-playing schools of the current membership being ready and eligible to move up the ladder (a.k.a. FBS) Plus, the WAC would simply replace UTRGV with another school, possibly a D-II school like Metro St. or CSU-Pueblo.

RGV is conducting a fb feasibility study currently. I would guess they will have fb within 5 years. Would they be able to join NMSU as Indies since they are both residents of the WAC? Would the WAC get some sort of grand father of some sort to help them restart the fb side of the conference??

Anyone think that Wichita State or Mo State would be able to help in restarting the WAC?

Any chance of this 'possible' future WAC?:
Idaho, New Mexico St, Wichita St, Missouri St, Sam Houston St, Lamar, Grand Canyon, Utah Valley, Rio Grande Valley

UTRGV, GCU, and Utah Valley all seem more like FCS schools than FBS schools. I could see them all starting football around the same time and helping each other with scheduling but I think UTRGV is destined to be the 14th Olympic Sports member and the 12th for football. The other two will ultimately be Big Sky schools if the top tier of that league ever tries to test the FBS waters.

With that being said, if Wichita St is getting no love from the MVFC because of their FBS aspirations, I think they too could be part of that same scheduling alliance until thinks shake out.

Are their any rules out their prohibiting a group of schools from starting a football only FCS or FBS conference from scratch?

I think the NCAA stipulates that IF your "home conference" sponsors football, you must play in that conference
(I think.... Not sure how this explains Notre Dame remaining independent, while a member of the ACC for all other sports, unless they finagled the rules to be an affiliate in all other sports - don't think this is the case).

Army / Navy don't have to play FCS in the Patriot, since they choose to play FBS, and the Patriot sponsors only FCS.

So certainly, if a cluster of schools from conference(s) that currently do NOT sponsor either FCS or FBS wanted to form a FB conference, I think they could.
However, to be considered an official conference, there may be a requirement of minimum of 6 or 8 members (don't recall - I think the WAC may have had the number lowered OR got an exemption while their FB league was disintegrating...)

CAA, MVFC, Pioneer FB leagues are examples of the concept ou are talking about.
