A new pro active chancellor, the terrible AD resigned today, a new stadium possibly in the near future or at the least major renovations to the existing one, maybe a move to IA. See story and athletic plans at

Reading the article in question, I can't infer why you refer to the AD as being a bad influence to the University.

As for the plans to move up, I could not find the article.

GSU, WCU, and APState should definately be on the lookout as the SoCon is converting to mostly private schools.

As far as the ex-AD being a bad influence, you had to be there to experence it, basically the reason he is gone is because he has done all he can over the past ten years to hold APP back, totally agianst the upcoming facility upgrade. As far as moving up, that is just a possibility but a good one. I don't think a new 30,000 seat would be under consideration if the thinking was not there.

As an App Alum, I'm excited about the additions and expansion of the stadium. But I do not favor moving to Div. I-A. It would be a money loser and a game loser for us. Better stay I-AA, being a big fish in a smaller pond.

And I also wish the SoCon would get more state schools.

Adding 2 private schools is not the SoCon "converting to private schools."

In fact, there are only 4 private schools in the 12 team league right now (Furman, Wofford, Elon, Davidson).

Now, where you have a problem is on fundemental issues. App/GSU will not be happy with the SoCon core that is smaller in size than them. And of the available schools, Coastal is a public but is still not enough to please App.

So where do you go from here?

But it seems like people tend to assume that (College of) Charleston and (The) Citadel are private universities...

When is a 2006 replacement for ETSU (Coastal Carolina? Gardner-Webb? Samford?) going to be announced? Anytime soon?

Georgia Southern joined the Southern Conference because it was the best available, for them, at the time in 1-AA.
Remember, the Southern Con changes quite often. VMI leaving last year, ETSU dropping fb; Davidson had gotten out in football some time back, etc.
Really, Appalachain State and Georgia Southern have the means right now to compete with SunBelt teams, looking at all their sports programs. Furman too, even if private.
Wofford gets $$$ due to their Spartanburg campus serving as the summer training facility for the Atlanta Falcons. Their student body is small.

Furman fans and administration have stated they are going nowhere. GSU's administration is happy being the big fish in a small pond, whether they leave is anyone's guess but I doubt it for the time being.

App is most likely to leave, and lots in the conference will say good riddance to the core of their fans.

So the Conference Core shapes up as:
College of Charleston - SC Public, 12000
UNCG - NC Public 11000
Davidson - NC Private 1600
Wofford - SC Private 1000
Citadel - SC Public 1300
Elon - NC Private 4800
Furman - SC Private 2200
Western Carolina - NC Public 7000
UTC - TN Public 7100

The two front runners for the conference are:
Coastal Carolina - SC Public 5600
UNCW - NC Public 9900

Other names mentioned:
VMI - VA Public
Hampton - VA Private
TN Tech - TN Public
Samford - AL Private
Presbyterian - SC Private
Winthrop - SC Private
Jacksonville St - AL Public
Eastern Kentucky - KY Public
North Alabama - AL Public

Other names are coming up now too

One note, Winthrop is public, not private.

December 9th is the day that consultants will vist the possible site for a new stadium at APP. A decision to renovate the old stadium or build a new one should be made soon after that.

I think either way APP is positioning to leave the SOCON in the near future.

To a conference of all public schools around the same size.

So what's wrong with private schools???

The ACC has some, so does the A-10, SoCon, PAC-10, Big 10, CUSA, OVC ....
