APSU's return to OVC (scholarship) football after a decade absence (again) leaves Morehead State as the only OVC member not competing for the conference football championship.

The closest member institution to Morehead State (Eastern Kentucky) has been mentioned as a possible candidate to replace ETSU in the SoCon, and it appears as though the travel distances for EKU in the SoCon would be comparable to its current travel distances in the OVC (sans Morehead State). EKU and Morehead are also the only members of the OVC in the Eastern Time Zone.

Now granted, it's difficult to foresee charter member Morehead State ever voluntarily leaving the OVC for the Atlantic Sun/Big South, but if EKU were to depart for the SoCon, Morehead State would become a lone outpost, in terms of both travel and football membership, and to a much lesser extent, history (Murray State would be the only other remaining charter member).

Questions

(1) Does the 10-member OVC continue to play an 8-game conference schedule (with the exception of 7-game conference schedules for Tennessee State and the team it doesn't play that year)?

(2) Are there constitutional mechanisms for the recision of a member (i.e. Morehead State) not competing for the football championship (ala ETSU in the SoCon)?

(3) Is Tennessee State (HBCU) a long-term member of the OVC for the foreseeable future?

(4) Is EKU more interested in the SoCon than vice versa?

The biggest issues here are:
Is Tenn St going to the SWAC

-or-

Is Samford or Tennessee Tech goig to the SoCon. EKU is out.

Would the OVC look to D2 to replace schools who leave, if so, do you think they would contact The Univeristy of North Alabama?

Does anyone know whether the OVC has ever held discussions with Western Kentucky ?

They play D-IAA football in MVC's Gateway Conference, and the other sports in the SunBelt (which has taken on a Florida slant). The are at the N extreme of the Sunbelt, SE extreme of the MVC, smack dab in the middle of the OVC.

The MAC is enticing them to move up to I-A, but money and attendance appear to be issues. It appears that WKU is willing to talk about a new home.

Is there a natural aversion to the OVC or something ?

A charter member of the Ohio Valley Conference, Western Kentucky left the OVC for the eight-member (UAB, JU, UNCC, ODU, USA, USF, VCU) Sun Belt in 1982, with football competing as a I-AA independent for most of the next two decades...

While WKU was slated to join the Gateway in the early 1990s, the move never actually came to fruition at that time (apparently the football program was on the verge of being terminated)...

WKU rejoined the OVC as a football-only member for the 1999-2000 seasons, but the newfound arrangement was severed after two years (presumably at the behest of a scorned OVC)...

WKU remaining in the Sun Belt rather than returning to the OVC strikes similarities to TCU leaving the WAC, and later, C-USA...(i.e. TCU "running away" from nearby SMU)...

A rich basketball heritage was parlayed into membership in an up and coming Sun Belt in 1982. While the picture of Sun Belt basketball has changed drastically in the subsequent two decades, WKU would probably view a return to the OVC as a downgrade, especially when you consider the existing membership...

WKU is probably going to bide their time in the Sun Belt until attaining MAC or MVC membership, and simply sees no reason to return to the OVC, which would undoubtedly appear as a major impediment to their "ultimate" goal...

Western Kentucky joining the OVC would be a step down for them. They are waiting for the MVC.

Or the (I-A) MAC or Sun Belt...not to say that "The Valley" wouldn't be the wisest choice for all concerned...yes, WKU is already a member of the Sun Belt for all sports but football, of which it is a member of the Gateway (read: MVC)...

Also your geography is alittle off. SEMO, Murray State are fairly close together. So is Eastern Kentucky and Austin Peay. Austin Peay is located just north of Nashville, home to Tennessee State. Since Eastern Kentucky is going to the Southern Conference, like they said before Morehead State could be bolting as well. One school that has been rumored in the past to join the OVC is Chattanooga. Dont know if they would or not but it would be a solid pickup for the OVC.
